"SKIF" is a Nizhny Novgorod women's ice hockey club competing in the Women's Hockey League (WHL). Founded in Nizhny Novgorod, it is considered one of the most decorated sports clubs in Nizhny Novgorod Region: the club is a multiple champion and medalist of the Russian Women's Ice Hockey Championship.[2]
History and Performance
The club's home arena is the Nagorny Cultural and Entertainment Complex on Gagarin Avenue — the same venue used by Torpedo Hockey Club. The complex was built in 1965 to a standard design and was previously known as the "Trade Union Palace of Sport" and the "Nagorny Palace of Sport." Following its 2007 reconstruction, it holds 5,600 spectators.[2]
In the 2018/19 WHL regular season, the club played home matches in September 2018 against SK Gorny — a three-game series that ended with scores of 9:2, 6:2, and 2:3. During the season, head coach Golubovich openly noted that the team was forced to play with only two lines under a heavy workload.[2]
In the 2021/22 season, the club reached the WHL final. Head coach of that season Igor Averkin later recalled that the final game was marked by extraordinary tension: "We took to the ice ready to die — but to win."[1]
Connection to the Russian National Team
A number of SKIF players represented the Russian women's national team (ROC) at the XXIV Winter Olympic Games in Beijing in 2022. The team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Switzerland (2:4), and during the preliminary stage lost to Finland (0:5).[1] After returning from the Games, the athletes met with the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin.[1]
Roster and Management
Among the club's notable players are long-time captain Alexandra Kapustina, first-team goalkeeper Karina Zolotaryova, and Elena Guslistaya — a European Champions Cup winner.[1] The club's official website has been operating since 2014.[1]
