Volga Research Medical University (PRMU) is a federal state higher education institution specializing in medicine in Nizhny Novgorod, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health of Russia. It is located on Minin and Pozharsky Square, building 10/1. The university traces its history to the medical faculty of Nizhny Novgorod State University, founded in the early Soviet period; at various times it was known as the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) Medical Institute and the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NizhGMA). Its current name and status as a research university were conferred in the 2010s.[2]
Structure and Faculties
PRMU comprises the faculties of general medicine, preventive medicine, pediatrics, dentistry, and pharmacy, as well as the Faculty of Continuing Professional Education (FCPE) and the Faculty of Network Educational Programs. The university has a wide range of departments, from obstetrics and gynecology to X-ray endovascular diagnostics; a number of departments are named after distinguished scholars: the V. G. Vogralik Department of Hospital Therapy, the B. A. Korolev Department of Hospital Surgery, the N. Yu. Belenkov Department of Normal Physiology, the Professor N. E. Yakhontov Department of Oncology, the Professor V. Yu. Shakhov Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat Diseases, the A. I. Kozhevnikov Department of General Surgery, the K. G. Nikulin Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases and Geriatrics, the F. D. Agafonov Department of Pediatrics, the G. Ya. Gorodisskaya Department of Biochemistry, and the M. V. Kolokoltsev Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics, and Neurosurgery.[1]
University Clinic
PRMU includes the University Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinical complex of federal significance. In 2018, the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (NNRITO), located at 18 Verkhnevolzhskaya Embankment, was incorporated into its structure and received the status of the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the University Clinic.[2] The Institute of Pediatrics of the University Clinic, whose history goes back to the early 19th century, is a multidisciplinary children's medical institution of federal significance.
Research Activity and Ties with Other Organizations
PRMU takes part in interdepartmental research projects. In particular, university researchers tested the biological compatibility of transparent calcium fluorapatite Ceramics developed at Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University: cell experiments showed that fibroblasts actively attach to the surface of the material and retain high viability, which indicates the promise of the ceramics for implantation into soft tissue. In May 2024, PRMU, together with the Ministry of Health of Nizhny Novgorod Region, the Nizhny Novgorod Emergency Medical Service Station, and professional associations, organized the first regional scientific and practical conference, "Current Issues in the Organization and Provision of Emergency Medical Care," devoted to telemedicine, air-ambulance evacuation, and modern equipment.
Commemoration and Named Institutions
A number of memorial initiatives operate at the university. Since 1995, an I. I. Belyaev named scholarship has been established for students of the preventive medicine faculty. At the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases, a museum display case has been set up with materials devoted to the dermatologist Glavinskaya; her scientific works, photographs, documents, and personal belongings are kept in the department's museum room. For the 90th anniversary of the death of the physician V. N. Zolotnitsky, who stood at the origins of higher medical education in Nizhny Novgorod, a PRMU staff member published an article about him in 2020 in the journal "Meditsinsky Almanakh" (Medical Almanac).
International Activity
The university trains international students in English in the General Medicine and Dentistry programs, from the first through the sixth year. The partner for network-based instruction is the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine, which delivers an educational program in accordance with a curriculum approved by the Russian Ministry of Health, with the participation of PRMU instructors.[2]
