The Nizhny Novgorod Ambulance Station (official name: GBUZ NO "Nizhny Novgorod Ambulance Station," abbreviated SSMPNN) is a state budgetary healthcare institution of Nizhny Novgorod Region that provides emergency medical care to the residents of Nizhny Novgorod and, since October 2026, to a number of adjacent districts.

Operations and development

Since the beginning of the 2020s, the ambulance service of Nizhny Novgorod Region has added 256 modern vehicles to its fleet.[5] In October 2013, the station received 28 new vehicles at once. On November 14, 2019, Father Andrey Nagovitsyn, the dean of the Molitovsky Deanery, blessed the building and vehicles of the ambulance station of Leninsky District in Nizhny Novgorod; the blessing was initiated by the institution's own staff.[6][2] In particularly difficult cases, air ambulance services are used: since the beginning of 2024 alone, 156 flights have been carried out and 145 seriously ill patients have been evacuated, including 16 children.[5]

The station is one of the organizers of the professional community: in May 2024, together with the Nizhny Novgorod Region Ministry of Health, the Volga Research Medical University (PIMU), the Association of Ambulance Specialists of Nizhny Novgorod Region, and the Association of Physicians of the Volga Federal District, it held the first regional scientific and practical conference "Current Issues in the Organization and Provision of Emergency, Including Specialized Emergency, Medical Care." The conference discussed telemedicine technologies, the organization of air ambulance evacuation, and modern equipment; master classes were held using mannequins and simulation equipment, along with an exhibition of manufacturers of medical equipment and specialized vehicles.[5]

Staff safety

In December 2023, an attack on a station employee was recorded: at around 2:35 a.m. on December 17, a patient attacked a 33-year-old medical worker and inflicted multiple injuries on him, including a concussion. The circumstances and causes of the incident were investigated by the State Labor Inspectorate for Nizhny Novgorod Region.[3]

Expansion of the structure (2026)

Effective October 1, 2026, the emergency medical services departments of the central district hospitals of Kstovo and Balakhna officially became part of the Nizhny Novgorod Ambulance Station (SSMPNN).[1] The stated goals of the merger include introducing unified treatment protocols and workflows, strengthening staffing, raising employee salaries, shortening crew response times to calls, and maintaining the vehicle fleet at current standards.[1][4]
