The parks of Nizhny Novgorod are a set of urban green spaces that took shape mainly during the Soviet period and continue to serve as the traditional system of recreation areas for the city's residents. Photographic documentation from the Soviet period records the appearance of the city's parks and public gardens in the Gorky in the 1950s: The Kremlin, sculptural decoration of park spaces, the summer shell-shaped bandstand on the Volga escarpment (Alexandrovsky Garden), carousels, and pavilions with colonnades. Panoramic photographs of the Volga escarpment with the summer bandstand and a flotilla of ships on the Volga were published, among others, in foreign magazines. Construction of a permanent summer amphitheater on the escarpment dates to the 1970s.
