The district school in Nizhny Novgorod was an educational institution that operated in the city in the 19th century. The building in which it was housed has survived and is located at Ulyanova Street; it is a cultural heritage site of regional significance.[4] The school is significant to The History of Nizhny Novgorod above all as a place where a number of historical figures received their education, while its mid-19th-century architectural design holds independent historical value in its own right.[2]
Building and architectural design
The design of the school's main building and outbuildings (fligels) was prepared by architect P. S. Hess. The drawings, showing facades, floor and mezzanine plans, and a site plan with the buildings, are dated 1846.[2] The documents are held at the Russian State Historical Archive, in the collection of the Department of Public Education of the Ministry of Public Education (file no. RGIA. 733/96/474).[2]
Connection to historical figures
The Nizhny Novgorod Uyezd school was attended by Vaneyev Anatoly Alexandrovich). This fact is recorded in the heritage-protection documentation for the site.[4]
Cultural heritage status
The building at Ulyanov Street, 12 was designated a cultural heritage site of regional significance by decision of the Gorky Regional Executive Committee of the Council of People's Deputies of 18 December 1989, No. 471, as amended by the Nizhny Novgorod Region of 11 December 1998, No. 329.[4] The state registration number of the site is 5200562000.[4]
