The Nizhny Novgorod Interdistrict Environmental Protection Prosecutor's Office is a specialized prosecutor's office that oversees compliance with environmental legislation on the territory of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. It operates within the system of prosecutorial bodies of the Russian Federation.
Activities
The office's tasks include, in particular, reviewing materials on violations in the use of natural resources and environmental legislation. The office is entitled to file lawsuits in court seeking to have structures declared unauthorized and their owners ordered to demolish them, where the construction of facilities contravenes the designated purpose of land and forest plots.
In 2026, the office acted as plaintiff in a case concerning the demolition of cottages in the Zelyony Dol settlement in Gorodetsky District: on 24 March 2026 the Gorodets Town Court upheld the claim and ruled that 18 structures were unauthorized buildings, ordering their owners to demolish them. The court found that the construction of permanent buildings did not correspond to the designated use of the forest plot and was not provided for in the forest management project.
The office is also involved in responding to identified violations of ambient air quality. In August 2026 the Ministry of Ecology of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast forwarded to the environmental protection prosecutor's office and the Rospotrebnadzor Directorate data on excesses of permissible standards for a number of pollutants in the vicinity of the wood-processing enterprise PlayVud, recorded during sampling and night-time measurements using a mobile laboratory — for the purpose of taking prosecutorial response measures and verifying compliance with sanitary legislation.
