«Nizhegorodelectrotrans» is a Nizhny Novgorod enterprise that operates the city's electric public transport: trams and trolleybuses. The company's scope also includes the operation of electric bus routes.[1] At various times it has functioned as a municipal unitary enterprise (MUP) and as a state enterprise of Nizhny Novgorod Region (GP NO). It is one of the region's key transport operators, alongside «Nizhegorodpassazhiravtotrans».

Tram Operations

The enterprise manages the Nizhny Novgorod tram network, one of the largest in Russia. A distinctive feature of the system is its steep descents toward the Oka and the Volga. Of the two bridges across the Oka that carry tram tracks, service currently operates via the Molitovsky Bridge; trams no longer run across the Kanavinsky Bridge. The terminal stop at Moscow Railway Station is at least 400 metres from the nearest stops of other tram lines.

The enterprise hosts an electric transport museum with a collection of vintage tram cars.

Trolleybus Operations and Depot Overhauls

In August 2026, GP NO «Nizhegorodelectrotrans» commissioned major overhauls of three trolleybus depots. The total value of the contracts awarded came to approximately 435 million rubles. About two years earlier the enterprise had already entered into contracts for repairs to the same depots with LLC «Liga» for a combined sum of around 769 million rubles; an advance payment of 368 million rubles had been transferred to the contractor, but the work was never completed, necessitating a fresh tender. A shortage of trolleybus drivers at the enterprise persists.[1]

Cooperation with Other Transport Enterprises

In August 2026, the management of «Nizhegorodelectrotrans» took part in an inaugural meeting organised by the Ministry of Transport of Nizhny Novgorod Region in Dzerzhinsk on 26 August 2026 to address the financial recovery of the municipal enterprise «Express». Together with representatives of «Nizhegorodpassazhiravtotrans», the management of «Nizhegorodelectrotrans» undertook to participate in an audit of «Express»'s financial and operational activities and to provide assistance in preparing tender documentation for route operations.

Staffing and Personnel Training. In 2026, GP «Nizhegorodelectrotrans» virtually eliminated its shortage of electric bus drivers: since the beginning of the year more than 20 new employees have joined the workforce. The enterprise operates a training centre where electric transport drivers are prepared: «Nizhegorodelectrotrans» covers all training costs in full, and trainees receive a stipend. At the dispatch point in the Torpedo residential complex, daily pre-shift medical checks for drivers have been transferred to an automated format: a dedicated device allows drivers to measure their blood pressure, undergo a breath-alcohol test, and receive clearance for duty without the involvement of on-staff medical personnel. With the onset of autumn 2026, the electric bus route E-16 improved its service: whereas previously operations ended at 18:00–19:00, the resolution of the staffing shortage has meant that the last runs now depart after 22:00.[1]
