Moscow Railway Station of Nizhny Novgorod is the central railway station of the Gorky Railway, the passenger terminal of the Gorky-Moskovsky station.
The Gorky-Moskovsky station is a major junction station of the Russian Railways network. This came about historically: after the railway to St. Petersburg, the second railway in Russia was laid to Nizhny Novgorod, to the famous Nizhny Novgorod Fair.
This railway has not lost its relevance today either: most passenger trains to Moscow, the Urals, and Siberia, as well as to Mongolia and China, pass through Nizhny Novgorod.
About the station
The first station building was built in 1862. The present-day station building was built in 1965 by architect S. Gotlib. It consists of two interconnected wings. In the design of the façade facing the station forecourt, the device of dividing it with vertical pylons was used to give the building greater monumentality, a device that became widespread under the influence of the architecture of the Moscow Palace of Congresses.
Revolution Square by Moscow Railway Station has repeatedly been the site of collisions with pedestrians. In 2025, an employee of the regional government died there after getting out of a taxi and colliding with a bus; the bus driver was later sentenced.[1] In 2026, city authorities changed the traffic pattern on Revolution Square by the station: they relocated and installed additional road signs, expanded the bus passenger drop-off zone near the Tsarsky Pavilion, removing the old barriers, and set up the stopping zone for private vehicles and taxis opposite the station's main entrance. The TsRTS (Center for Traffic Management) installed additional violation-recording cameras.[1][2] Back in December 2025, three violation photo-recording systems for stopping violations were already operating on Revolution Square by the station; since the start of that December alone, a thousand drivers had received fines.[2]
