Biography
Vladimir Ilyich Luzyanin was born on April 18, 1929. He died on August 18, 2021, at the age of 92. Luzyanin's working life began long before he came to Gidromash: in 1942, at the age of thirteen, he worked in a village bringing in and threshing the harvest. The first airplane Luzyanin ever saw in his life was a disassembled one: in July 1942, a downed German Junkers Ju 88 bomber was brought to the Chkalov Monument in Gorky.[2][1] He received a technical education at the Gorky Aviation Technical School, and then at the Gorky Polytechnic Institute.
After graduating from the aviation technical school in 1950, he came to work at the "Gidromash" plant (then known as P.O. Box 69) as an assistant foreman. He then worked as a foreman, head of the maintenance and repair department, shop head, and head of the quality control department.
In 1964, Vladimir Luzyanin became the plant's chief engineer. In the late 1950s, Luzyanin traveled to China as part of a group of Gorky aircraft builders, where he helped establish production of MiG-19 fighters. From 1958 to 1960, Luzyanin, as part of a delegation from the Gorky Aircraft Plant, oversaw the launch of MiG-19 production in China.[3][1] In that same year, "Gidromash" was chosen as the industry leader in the production of landing gear and hydraulic cylinders. Funds were allocated for its modernization. Vladimir Ilyich, with his characteristic enthusiasm and energy, threw himself into the work. All parts were classified, new production lines were created, shops were reorganized according to new technological principles, and the production of assemblies was brought closer to large-scale series production.
In the 1970s and 1980s, as general director of the enterprise, Vladimir Luzyanin continued its reconstruction. He became director of Gidromash in 1969, at the time the youngest enterprise director in the USSR's aviation industry system. In 1971, on Luzyanin's initiative, the Gidromash plant merged with a design bureau, which made it possible to close the full cycle — design, manufacturing, testing, and operation — within a single enterprise.[2] In 1996, Luzyanin became president and chairman of the board of directors of Gidromash, retaining leadership of the enterprise in its new status.[3][1] Forward-looking and demanding of himself and his subordinates, he constantly kept the renewal of production under his control. During this time, a further 200% of production floor space was brought into operation, and new equipment was introduced, along with new technology for machining products with carbide and diamond tooling, CNC machines, and electron-beam welding. Some new technological methods unique to this type of production were first used at Gidromash.
For the past fifty years, Gidromash JSC, headed by V.I. Luzyanin, has produced takeoff and landing gear for civil and military aviation. The aircraft landing gear made by the plant is installed on various modifications of Yakovlev aircraft, Ilyushin passenger planes, and Tupolev military aircraft, on virtually all MiGs, and on fighters of the Sukhoi Design Bureau. Cooperation with the Antonov company resulted in unique landing gear for the heavy transport aircraft Ruslan, Mriya, and An-70. The Mi-8, Mi-24, Mi-26, Ka-26, Ka-50, and other helicopters are equipped with hydraulic assemblies from Gidromash JSC. Unique landing gear for the Buran space shuttle was designed and manufactured here.
In the late 1990s, thanks to V.I. Luzyanin's efforts, the problem of the enterprise's entry into the international market was solved. Under Luzyanin's leadership, Gidromash became a supplier of landing gear components for foreign aircraft — Airbus, Embraer, and Bombardier airplanes and AgustaWestland helicopters.[1] In this difficult situation, Vladimir Ilyich proved himself not only an outstanding manager but also a diplomat, able to find a common language with the most difficult partners. At present, the enterprise supplies its products to leading firms in Germany, France, and Italy, and continues to cooperate with India and China.
In 2000, Gidromash JSC was awarded the Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor's Standard "Leader of the Year."
According to an independent study by Expert magazine, V.I. Luzyanin was named among the country's top one hundred leading managers.
But Gidromash is only part of Vladimir Ilyich's work and part of his life. He has another, very important area of responsibility — the Nizhny Novgorod Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, which he has headed for more than 15 years. Luzyanin stood at the origins of the creation of the Nizhny Novgorod Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and led it for more than 20 years; the organization is a member of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.[3]
Leaders of the Nizhny Novgorod economy created it in 1989, when the era of planning was coming to an end. Ahead lay a market with many unknowns. They had to enter it with the fewest possible losses, find their footing in the new environment as quickly as possible, and learn to work under unfamiliar conditions. That meant coordinating their efforts, developing shared views on what was happening, finding partners beyond the Region while taking into account the interests of the industrial complex and the Region as a whole, having a coherent economic strategy, helping one another when needed, and seeking dialogue with the authorities (together it is easier — together there is strength!).
A large, authoritative organization needed an equally authoritative leader. After some time, the choice fell on V.I. Luzyanin, who became its president.
Under him, the association gained might and strength. No serious decision on industrial or social policy is made without its participation or without consulting it. NAPP's proposals are always taken into account by both the Regional administration and the administration of Nizhny Novgorod. The directors' corps works actively in the Regional Legislative Assembly. The association's active positions and its strategy of operation are developed with the most direct participation of Vladimir Ilyich. He personally defends the interests of Nizhny Novgorod industrialists before the executive and legislative authorities. Both the president and the prime minister know his word. Under the leadership of V.I. Luzyanin, various targeted federal programs are developed and implemented, and exhibitions of products of Nizhny Novgorod enterprises are held in Russia and abroad.
High award
On March 30, 2009, the President of the Russian Federation D.A. Medvedev, by his Order No. 199-rp, awarded V.I. Luzyanin a Certificate of Honor.
The Order states: "For a great contribution to the development of domestic industry and many years of conscientious work, to award the Certificate of Honor of the President of the Russian Federation to Luzyanin Vladimir Ilyich, president of the Nizhny Novgorod open joint-stock company 'Gidromash.'"
Awarding the Certificate of Honor of the President of the Russian Federation is a form of recognition for services in defending the Fatherland and ensuring the security of the state, strengthening the rule of law, protecting health and life, protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens, state-building, the economy, science, culture, the arts, upbringing, education, sports, charitable activity, and other services to the state.
The Certificate of Honor of the President of the Russian Federation is accompanied by a badge bearing a serial number. On April 18, 2022, on the 93rd anniversary of Luzyanin's birth, a memorial plaque in his honor was unveiled on the facade of the administrative building of the Gidromash plant; the ceremony was attended by the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin, the Chairman of the Legislative Assembly Evgeny Lyulin, and the heads of the largest defense enterprises of Nizhny Novgorod. After Luzyanin's death, the Gidromash plant was renamed NAO "Gidromash" named after V.I. Luzyanin.[2][3]
