"Kladovka. Gallery of Stories" is an art gallery and museum space in Nizhny Novgorod, located at 8 Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street. It is part of the Nizhny Novgorod State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve (NGIAMZ). The gallery began as a gathering point for the city's avant-garde artists and later turned to collecting artifacts of the Soviet era connected with music and culture. The art space opened on December 25, 2007, the day that became the gallery's official founding date. The gallery occupies a three-story building that is an architectural monument of the 19th century.[5][5][1]

Exhibition

The permanent exhibition is built on the "time machine" principle: the visitor is surrounded by musical instruments, record players, vinyl records, posters, and objects of Soviet everyday life. The gallery recreates the atmosphere of a Soviet recording studio; a separate section is devoted to Nizhny Novgorod musicians past and present, as well as to the radio and audio equipment produced at Gorky's factories.[1]

Among the notable parts of the collection are an archive of Beatles fandom from the 1960s–70s, a film display case with black-and-white portraits of actors born in the Nizhny Novgorod area, and an exhibition of posters by Valery Barykin in the style of "Soviet pin-up." A significant share of the items in the permanent exhibition were brought in and donated by Nizhny Novgorod residents themselves, so behind every object there is a specific human story.[5] At the gallery you can also buy old vinyl from a selection featuring a wide range of performers. You can listen to music on various media — on a gramophone, on a reel-to-reel tape recorder — and also buy original handmade crafts, books by Nizhny Novgorod poets and writers, paintings, and photographs.[5][1]

Programs and Space

From May to October, an outdoor courtyard operates with a stage designed to look like a Soviet apartment; photo shoots, outdoor exhibitions, theatrical performances, and concerts are held here. The gallery's art courtyard is constantly changing and transforming depending on the events taking place: the theme of the event determines the design of the space.[5] The main exhibition is intended for visitors aged 6 and over, and the tour "The Soviet Music Lover's Corner" for those aged 12 and over. The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m.; the last Thursday of each month is a cleaning day. Admission to the main exhibition costs 150 rubles for adults and 100 rubles for schoolchildren, full-time students, and pensioners; children under 7 enter free; tickets are accepted under the "Pushkin Card" program.[4][1]
