Gallery 9B is a Nizhny Novgorod contemporary art gallery that opened on March 16, 2018.[1] According to its organizers, it is the first institutional art residency in Nizhny Novgorod.[2] It was founded by the art collectors Georgy Smirnov and Elena Talyanskaya.[1] It is located at 9b Oktyabrskaya Street, in a pre-revolutionary brick building in the historic center of the city, a few steps from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street and Sverdlov Square.[4]

Space and activities

The gallery occupies two floors and positions itself as a multifunctional art venue: it hosts exhibitions, lectures, meetings with artists and public figures, film screenings, performances, and auctions.[1] The venue presents exhibitions created jointly with other galleries, the gallery's own projects, and projects prepared as part of its art residencies.[2]

The art residency program operates by invitation: visiting artists become acquainted with the culture, history, and art scene of Nizhny Novgorod and the surrounding region, hold open events, and work on their own projects. The residents have included Alisa Yoffe, Rodion Kitaev, Sveta Shuvaeva, Stasya Grishina, Andrey Berger, and others.[2]

Since the autumn of 2023, the gallery has been running the project "Workshop of Gallery 9B," aimed at young Nizhny Novgorod artists who work with hybrid objects, graphic art, and painting.[2] The artists represented by the gallery include the art group PROVMYZA, Dima Kadyntsev, Syoma Bomse, Evsti Bomse, Yuri Otinov, Yulya Ivanova, and Maria Egorova.[4]

Participation in fairs and professional recognition

The gallery regularly takes part in major Russian contemporary art fairs: Cosmoscow (2024), Kontur (2023, 2024), and blazar (2023, 2024).[4] At Cosmoscow, the gallery's booth (Zh7) was built around contrasts and points of contact between the works of the participating artists: mosaic panels by Stas Skim, papier-mâché masks by Yuri Otinov, paintings by Evsti Boms, and works by Maria Egorova, Syoma Boms, Dima Kadyntsev, Lyudmila Krutikova, and Anna Bat.[3] Since 2024, the gallery has been a member of the Association of Galleries (AGA).[4]
