Futuro Gallery is an independent contemporary art gallery founded in 2016 in Nizhny Novgorod. It is located at 6 Rozhdestvenskaya Street, 2nd floor. In 2024 it opened a second space in Moscow, on the grounds of the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art (1/8 4th Syromyatnichesky Lane, building 9). The founder and director of the gallery is Anastasia Panova.[1][2]
The Building and the Space
The gallery's Nizhny Novgorod hall occupies the second floor of a tenement building belonging to the City Society, dating from the first quarter of the 19th century and known to locals as Pereplyotchikov House, after the mayor, industrialist, and philanthropist. Over the years the building housed the Nikolaevsky Public Bank, a hotel, and retail premises. It acquired its present appearance shortly before the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896: a third floor was added at that time, and the facade was redesigned in the Art Nouveau style to a design by the architect Vladimir Lemke. In the Soviet period it held offices of the future Avtozavod, communal apartments, and the Mayakovsky Cinema.[2]
The gallery's exhibition hall is a ruined space with stucco moldings, traces of fires, high ceilings with exposed beams, and historic tile flooring. This setting is deliberately set against the neutral "white cube" of conventional galleries. The Moscow space at Winzavod, by contrast, is covered in glossy white tile.[1][2]
Activities
The gallery was founded by the restaurateurs behind the Eda i Kultura project, which at the time of the opening united 17 establishments in Nizhny Novgorod; the restaurant BEZUKHOV operates on the ground floor of the same building.[2] The gallery presents work in a variety of media — painting, graphic art, photography, sculpture, video, and installations — and hosts performances, film screenings, lectures, concerts, and theatrical productions. Its artists include both established authors and young ones; many of the works are available for purchase.[2][3]
Futuro takes part in major contemporary art fairs: Cosmoscow, the St. Petersburg "1703," and SAM Fair at the Street Art Museum. The gallery is a member of the Association of Galleries.[1][2] Since 2023, Futuro has participated in the regional art residency program of Nizhny Novgorod Region. In 2024, together with the artist Daniil Antropov, the gallery organized a residency in Jingdezhen, the center of Chinese porcelain production.[1]
The gallery works with guest curators and carries out exhibition projects jointly with other cultural institutions. Among the artists and series it has shown are the paintings of Sergey Karev ("Russian Trance," "Russian Land"), the ceramics of Alexey Veselovsky, the objects of Alexandra Pavlovskaya, and the paintings of Katya Tsareva.[1][3][4]
Opening Hours
The Nizhny Novgorod gallery is open daily except Monday and Tuesday, from 12:00 to 20:00. Admission is 200 rubles; a reduced ticket for schoolchildren, students, and pensioners costs 100 rubles. The Moscow space is open Tuesday through Sunday during the same hours.[2]
