Igor Yuryevich Arefyev is a Nizhny Novgorod combustiologist (burn specialist), Candidate of Medical Sciences, Chief Physician of the University Clinic of the Privolzhsky Research Medical University (PRMU), and Chief Freelance Combustiologist of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Ministry of Health.[1]
Career
In 1994, Arefyev was admitted through a competitive selection process to the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics as a junior research associate in the department for sequelae of burn and cold injuries in adults.[1] In 2000, he defended his candidate's dissertation on the topic "Rehabilitation of Patients with Sequelae of Burns to the Dorsal Surface of the Hand."[1] From 2008, holding the position of leading research associate, he served as acting head of the department of reconstructive and plastic surgery and rehabilitative treatment, combining administrative duties with research activities.[1]
In 2010, he completed a short-term training course at the faculty for the training and advanced education of civilian physicians at the Military Medical Academy in Saint Petersburg, specializing in "Organization of Medical-Diagnostic Work in Healthcare Institutions."[1]

Arefyev is the author of 81 published works, including three methodological guidelines, 15 patents, and 22 rationalization proposals.[1]

In 2026, the University Clinic under Arefyev's leadership successfully treated a 21-year-old student with burns covering 90 percent of his body surface area. Commenting on the patient's discharge, Arefyev identified the coordinated work of the medical team, the psychological support provided by the patient's mother, and the patient's own willpower as the key factors in saving his life, emphasizing that burns occur in seconds while rehabilitation takes years.[1]
