Historical photographs of the square date from the period 1903–1916, which shows that it had already taken its present form by the early twentieth century.[1]
Freedom Square (formerly Ostrozhnaya Square; colloquially — Svoboda) is a city square at the intersection of Varvarskaya, Gorky, and Belinsky Streets. It is one of the key places in the Historic Center of Nizhny Novgorod: the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate Ostrog and a city gate once stood here.
Transportation
Freedom Square is a major transportation hub. All types of urban transport are represented here: the tram, trolleybus, buses, and shared minibus taxis; a taxi stand is located in the center of the square. In the 2020s, the Ploshchad Svobody metro station became the terminus of a section of the Nizhny Novgorod metro now under construction: the tunnel boring machine "Evdokia" is driving the left running tunnel from Gorkovskaya station to Ploshchad Svobody station at a depth of about 18 meters beneath Maxim Gorky Street. As of September 2026, of the 485 rings of reinforced-concrete high-precision lining in the left running tunnel, the metro builders had installed 270, meaning construction was more than half complete; at that moment the "Evdokia" machine was in the area of Kulibin Park. The total length of the left running tunnel from Gorkovskaya station to Ploshchad Svobody station will be 729 meters; more than 17,000 cubic meters of soil have been removed during its excavation.
The right tunnel to Freedom Square is being driven by a second boring machine, "Alyona," launched in late July 2026; both tunnels are planned to be completed by the end of 2026. In October 2026, preparations began in the tunnels on the section from Sennaya to Freedom Square for installing the track superstructure: suppliers started delivering rails and the contact rail that supplies electric power; on the section from Gorkovskaya to Sennaya, about 900 tons of rails, each 25 meters long, are to be laid, supplied from Chelyabinsk, while contact rails totaling 320 tons are due to arrive from Izhevsk.[2] The construction of the two stations in the upper part of the city — Ploshchad Svobody and Sennaya — is estimated at almost 48 billion rubles; the general contractor is the company "Mosproekt-3-3," and the deadline for completing both stations is the end of 2027.[3][4][5]
Landmarks
Behind the square stands the building of the Ostrog, which houses a museum, and a small park with the FIDO Monument. The city's Opera Theater adjoins the square.
When Nizhny Novgorod residents say "let's meet at Svoboda" or "I'm heading to Svoboda," they mean precisely this square.
Public Life
Thanks to its proximity to the Ostrog, Svoboda is a favorite spot for unsanctioned rallies and demonstrations. Trolleybuses were overturned here during the tobacco riots of the late USSR; here the Militia dispersed the Dissenters and members of the Lemon Party. In December 2011, a rally for fair elections was held on the square (24.12.2011).
