Electrobuses are a form of urban electric passenger transport that has been operating in Nizhny Novgorod since February 2024 as part of a large-scale public transport fleet renewal. They replaced aging trolleybuses, roughly 80% of which had fallen into disrepair by the mid-2020s.[1] By August 2026, the Nizhny Novgorod electrobus fleet numbered 120 vehicles.[2]

Procurement and Production

Between 113 and 120 electrobuses were purchased for Nizhny Novgorod using federal funds: the federal budget allocated 5.2 billion rubles to the region.[1] Production was carried out by two manufacturers: the Likinsky Bus Plant (LiAZ, part of the GAZ Group), which produced 58 vehicles, and the Russian-Belarusian joint venture Nizhekotrans, which manufactures the MiNiN model at its production facility in Vorsma (62 units).[1] Deliveries began in autumn 2023; the first LiAZ electrobus entered service in February 2024.[1] To support charging, 53 charging stations were installed across the city, including fast-charging units located directly at terminus stops.[1] The charging infrastructure is also of Russian manufacture.[2]

In May 2026, the fleet was expanded with a new mid-size model — the electric PAZ e-Citymax 9, produced by the Pavlovsky Avtobus association. The vehicle accommodates 77 passengers (25 seated) and is equipped with a dedicated area for passengers with limited mobility and those with pushchairs; the first such electrobus entered service on route E-11 on 7 May 2026.[3]

Routes

Electric buses replaced trolleybuses primarily where the infrastructure could not support their retention; trolleybus service remained in Sormovo and Moskovsky Districts.[1] In December 2023, eleven routes were designated for electric buses in both parts of the city.[4] In the Zarechka (lower) part of the city, electric buses operate on routes No. 2, 4, 11, 12, 14, and 22; in the upper part, they partially replace trolleybus routes No. 9, 13, 17, and 31.[2] Several routes serve new residential developments: routes E-12 and E-14 connect Proletarskaya metro station with the Torpedo residential complex, E-9 connects Minin and Pozharsky Square with the Kuznechikha-2 microdistrict, and E-17 connects Minin and Pozharsky Square with the Tsvety microdistrict.[4] Routes "Ulitsa Mineeva — GAZ Gate No. 7" and "Posyolok Dachny — Komsomolskaya Square" are also in operation; the schedule of route E-11 is synchronized with the working hours of the Gorky Automobile Plant.[3][4] From November 1, 2026, route E-16 was launched, connecting Proletarskaya metro station with the Scherbinki microdistrict in Prioksky District — four electric buses entered service on the line.[5]

According to the Transport Systems Development Centre (TsDTS), the most popular routes remain E-9, E-12, E-13, and E-14.[6]

Technical specifications and operation

The LiAZ electric bus accommodates up to 85 passengers; the interior features three fare payment terminals (at the front, middle, and rear doors), device charging points, a designated area for wheelchair users and passengers with children, and illuminated signal buttons positioned at arm height.[1] A number of stops are equipped with "smart" displays showing real-time arrival information, which, by observation, are more accurate than online timetables.[6] Among the issues noted during testing in 2026 is schedule disruption on certain routes: electric buses may arrive later than indicated or, conversely, earlier.[6]

According to drivers, the vehicles have performed well in a variety of weather conditions, including winter.[1] Passengers note the quietness, comfort, and regularity of service compared to trolleybuses, which frequently broke down due to icing of the contact network.[1]
