In the 1802 list of populated places of Vyatka Governorate, the village appears under the name Yuronga (Ustinskaya Volost, Yaransk Okrug): at that time it had 7 households and 38 male souls of yasak peasants.[1] According to the census of 1859–1873, it had 13 households, 53 men, and 58 women (111 residents), and the village belonged to Yaransk Uyezd.[1] The 1891 register records 39 families and 175 residents; the residents' main trade is given as rope-making.[1] The village's Mari name, Kugu-Yurmor, derives from the local river Yurmor (Yuronga).

According to the 2002 census, the permanent population was 104 people: Russians made up 71% and Mari 29%. By 2010 the population had declined to 89. The village's postal code is 606730.
