Alexey Nikolayevich Podnebesny (born in 1978 in Gorky) is a Nizhny Novgorod lawyer, a former prosecutor's office investigator, a public activist of the 2000s and early 2010s, and later an author and blogger, known as the popularizer of the word "incel" on the Russian-language internet.[1][2] In August 2024 he was detained in Saint Petersburg and charged with sexual intercourse and lewd acts with a person under sixteen years of age; the investigation was completed in December 2024, and the case was sent to court. The trial lasted almost a year and a half and was held behind closed doors; during closing arguments, the prosecution requested a seven-year prison sentence in a penal colony for Podnebesny. Until May 2025, Podnebesny was held in pretrial detention; after the preventive measure was eased, he was seen in Nizhny Novgorod, where, according to available information, he was looking for a wife.[3][4][5]

Education and Work in the Prosecutor's Office

Podnebesny graduated from the Faculty of Law of Lobachevsky University in 2003 with honors, and then worked as a prosecutor's office investigator in Shakhunya.[2] In February 2005 he was dismissed from the prosecutor's office on the grounds of "committing a misdeed that discredits the honor of a prosecutorial employee."[1]

After his dismissal, he taught criminology and criminal law until 2009.[2] Podnebesny set out the circumstances of his work and his departure from the prosecutor's office in an autobiographical book, "In the Second Circle," posted in open access on Samizdat.[6]

Public Activity in the 2000s

After leaving the prosecutor's office, Podnebesny turned to public work: animal welfare, environmental issues, and urban conflicts over development.[1] He was one of the organizers of the Nizhny Novgorod movement against infill development and held single-person pickets outside the city administration building.[7]

In those same years he ran his own website with materials about Nizhny Novgorod officials and took part in founding the Nizhny Novgorod Society of Friends of Cuba.[7]

The Svetloyar Incident Case

On the night of July 17, 2011, a fight broke out at Lake Svetloyar in the Voskresensky District, in which Podnebesny wounded a twenty-year-old man with a knife. On July 21, 2011, he was detained, and the next day the Voskresensky District Court sanctioned his arrest; on September 21, 2011, Podnebesny was released on a written undertaking not to leave the area.[8][9]

According to the investigators' version of events, Podnebesny, who was walking around the lake with his wife, failed to pass two men coming the other way on the path, stabbed one of them in the chest during the ensuing quarrel and fled, and during his arrest on July 18 sprayed pepper spray in the face of a detective who ran up to him.[8] Podnebesny himself and his defense maintained that he and his wife had been attacked and that he was defending himself.[8][9] He was initially charged under Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code; the charge was later reclassified as attempted murder.[9]

A campaign in defense of the accused unfolded around the case: supporters formed a defense committee, held pickets, and called the prosecution fabricated.[9] In 2012, the court found Podnebesny guilty of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and of using violence against a representative of authority, and sentenced him to four years of imprisonment, suspended.[4]

Incel blogging

After his divorce in 2016, Podnebesny began calling himself an incel and developing his own theory, which he called "vaginocapitalism."[1] By 2024, his Telegram channel had more than 64,000 subscribers.[1] It was with this public image that he became known beyond Nizhny Novgorod.[2]

Administrative cases

On December 24, 2019, the Nizhegorodsky District Court sentenced Podnebesny to seven days of arrest under Article 20.3.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses ("incitement of hatred or enmity, degradation of human dignity"): the grounds were posts in the group he had created, "Anti-Feminist Left Front."[10]

On June 23, 2022, the Kanavinsky District Court fined him 30,000 rubles for discrediting the Armed Forces: the court deemed the quotation marks around the word "special operation" in his post an expression of disrespect.[11]

On October 6, 2025, a court fined Podnebesny 10,000 rubles, ruling that his posts about women constituted degradation of human dignity on the basis of sex; he himself explained that he was criticizing "femino-fascism."[12]

2024 Criminal Case

On August 19, 2024, Podnebesny was detained in Saint Petersburg after a video recording involving a fifteen-year-old schoolgirl appeared online; on August 21, a court sent him to a pretrial detention center for two months.[4][5] The charge was sexual intercourse and lewd acts with a person under the age of sixteen.[5]

At his first interrogation, Podnebesny himself invoked Article 51 of the Constitution and refused to testify, while publicly claiming that the girl had introduced herself as twenty-three years old and that he learned her real age two days before his detention.[1][4] After the court's ruling on his arrest, he stated in the courtroom that, as a former law enforcement officer, being held in custody meant a threat of reprisal for him.[4]

On December 10, 2024, the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for Saint Petersburg announced that the investigation was complete and sent the case to court.[13] On May 20, 2025, the court eased the preventive measure: detention in custody was replaced with a ban on certain actions, including a ban on using the internet, attending mass events, and discussing the case with the press.[14]
