Gustov Aleksandr Vasilyevich (born December 2, 1937) is a Nizhny Novgorod neurologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and professor. Founder and long-serving head of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry of the Faculty of Advanced Medical Training at the Nizhny Novgorod Medical Academy — now the Privolzhsky Research Medical University — and director of Neurological Clinic No. 2 at the regional Semashko Hospital.[1][2][3] Honored Physician of Russia (1998), Honored Scientist of Russia (2008), and laureate of the Nizhny Novgorod Prize (2001).[4][1]
Academic career
In 1961 he graduated from the Gorky Medical Institute named after S. M. Kirov with a specialization in general medicine.[5] He defended his candidate's dissertation, "Clinical and Immunological Characteristics of Cerebrovascular Disorders," in 1971 at the Institute of Neurology of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and his doctoral dissertation, "Clinical and Radiothermometric Diagnostic Criteria for Diseases of the Nervous System," in 1989 at the Russian State Medical University.[2][3]
In 1993 he founded and led the independent Department of Neurology and Psychiatry of the Faculty of Advanced Medical Training at the medical academy.[1] The department conducts its classes at the neurology wards of the regional Semashko Hospital and the regional children's hospital; its defining characteristic is considered to be the clinical orientation of its teaching.[1]

Research areas
In the 1970s, Gustov was the first researcher in the country to study immunological reactivity in patients with cerebrovascular pathology — this work marked the beginning of neuroimmunology as a field in Russian science.[2][3]
He later developed a radiothermometry method: based on radiophysical principles, it allows measurement of the deep-tissue temperature, including that of the brain, and assessment of cerebral metabolic activity and its changes in the course of treatment. For developing and introducing this field into clinical neurology, he was awarded bronze and silver medals from VDNKh.[2][3]
The third area of his work is restorative neurology. The school founded by Gustov developed and introduced rehabilitation programs for acute and chronic cerebrovascular diseases, syringomyelia, vertebrogenic lesions of the nervous system, myasthenia gravis, and migraine.[2][3] He also worked separately on establishing the rationale for ozone therapy in nervous system diseases; the results were summarized in the monograph "Ozone Therapy in Neurology," which went through several editions.[5]
Works and Students
He is the author of more than five hundred scholarly works, including nine monographs and thirty-five teaching aids and manuals for physicians.[2] He holds twenty inventions protected by author's certificates and patents, all of which have been introduced into practical healthcare.[5] Under his supervision, thirty-three candidate's dissertations were defended; he also served as academic advisor for six doctoral dissertations.[3]

Recognition
Full member of the Academy of Medical and Technical Sciences, member of the presidium of the board of the All-Russian Scientific Society of Neurologists, member of the problem commission "Epilepsy. Paroxysmal Conditions" of the scientific council on neurology, chairman of the subcommission on neurology of the central attestation commission in the Volga Federal District, member of the editorial board of the Neurologichesky Zhurnal (Neurological Journal), deputy chairman of the dissertation council at the medical academy.[3][5]
Awarded the medal "For the Development of Virgin and Fallow Lands."[5] On the occasions of Gustov's seventy-fifth and eightieth birthdays, the Zhurnal nevrologii i psikhiatrii imeni S. S. Korsakova (S. S. Korsakov Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry) published articles dedicated to him.[4][6]
