Khvatova Elena Mikhaylovna (April 11, 1925, Vyatka — September 11, 2014, Nizhny Novgorod) was a Soviet and Russian biochemist, Doctor of Medical Sciences (1968), Professor, and Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1986). She served for many years as head of the biochemistry department at Gorky Medical Institute, and was one of the country's leading specialists in the field of cerebral energy metabolism under hypoxia.[1][2]
Education and Early Career
She was born in Vyatka (now Kirov). In 1948 she graduated from the S. M. Kirov Gorky Medical Institute with a specialization in general medicine, and in 1952 completed her residency at the same institute. From 1952 to 1969 she worked at the Central Research Laboratory (TsNIL) of the Gorky Medical Institute, advancing from postgraduate researcher to head of the biochemistry department.[2]
Research Activities
In 1968 she defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic "Cerebral Energy Metabolism under Conditions of Artificial Hypothermia and during the Recovery of Body Temperature." In 1969 she became a professor and took charge of the G. Ya. Gorodiskaya Department of Biochemistry at Gorky Medical Institute, which she led until 1990. After 1990 she continued to work in that department as a professor.[1][2]
Khvatova's principal research interests centered on the state of metabolic processes and the properties of enzymes involved in cerebral energy metabolism under conditions of oxygen deprivation: assessing oxidative phosphorylation, measuring the concentrations of high-energy phosphates (ATP, ADP, AMP) in the brain during disruptions of vital activity, and studying adaptive changes in cerebral metabolism during hypobaric training and the administration of adaptogens — specifically the delta-sleep peptide ("deltaran").[1]
One practical outcome of this research was a neurochemical method for assessing the resistance of animals to hypoxia, developed jointly with V. M. Galkin, A. N. Moshkova, G. V. Mironova, and A. N. Sidorkina. The method enables prediction of the effective number of hypobaric training sessions through a mathematical model of changes in ATP and AMP concentrations in the brain. The patent application was filed in 1986, and RF Patent No. 2022526 was published in 1994.[3]
Over the course of her scientific career she published 250 scholarly works, received 19 inventor's certificates, and held 1 patent of the Russian Federation for an invention.[1][2]
Recognition
In 1986 she was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the RSFSR.[2] In 2005, the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy conferred upon her the title of Honored Professor of NGMA.[1]
She is buried at the Nizhny Novgorod Marina Roscha Cemetery.[2]
