The Gorky Medical Institute named after S. M. Kirov was a higher medical educational institution that operated in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) from 1930 and was later transformed into the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy. The institute was housed in the building of the board of the Volga Steamship Company on Minin and Pozharsky Square — one of the largest monuments of early 20th-century Russian neoclassicism in the architecture of Nizhny Novgorod.
History and location
The building of the board of the Volga Steamship Company on Minin and Pozharsky Square was erected in 1914; because of the outbreak of the First World War, the still-unfinished building was turned over that November to serve as a city military hospital. From 1930 it housed the Gorky Medical Institute named after S. M. Kirov. A memorial plaque is installed on the building.
Faculty and departments
In 1934 the institute's department of faculty surgery was headed by the surgeon-urologist and Doctor of Medical Sciences Dmitry Petrovich Kuznetsky, founder of the Nizhny Novgorod school of urology, who led it until the end of his life in 1939. From 1959 to 1970 the department of hospital surgery was headed by the surgeon, Doctor of Medical Sciences and professor Mikhail Veniaminovich Kolokoltsev; from 1970 to 1975 he also founded and headed the department of traumatology and orthopedics at the Gorky Medical Institute.
Alumni
Among the institute's graduates were the oncologists Pavel Blokhin and Nikolai Blokhin, the oncologist Nikolai Trapeznikov, and the sculptor Boris Korolev. In 1943 the microbiologist Zinaida Nikolaevna Kochemasova graduated from the institute; she later became a Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and laureate of the USSR State Prize, spending most of her scientific career in Moscow, where she headed the department of microbiology, virology and immunology at the First Moscow Medical Institute.
