All those affected by the forest fires in Nizhny Novgorod Region are receiving humanitarian aid in full. This was stated to journalists on August 4 in Vyksa by Gennady Suvorov, Deputy Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region for social policy.

According to him, the government of Nizhny Novgorod Region is constantly receiving offers of help for those who lost their homes in the fires. "What they need most of all is clothing and basic necessities," the deputy governor said.

Public Organizations

The parties United Russia, A Just Russia, and the LDPR, as well as the public organization "Committee for the Defense of Nizhny Novgorod," also announced collections of clothing and essential items.[2]

The Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of United Russia, which was headed by Alexander Timofeyev, had by August 3, 2010 already sent drinking water and hygiene items to Vyksa and moved on to collecting linens, outerwear, and everyday clothing — the party reminded people that autumn and winter lay ahead. The scale of the disaster that the aid was being gathered for was this: since July 30, 2010, seven settlements in Vyksunsky District had fallen within the spread zone of a forest fire, and the village of Verkhnyaya Verey suffered the worst, with 338 residential houses destroyed by the fire.[2]

United Russia

« Every day, in all the districts of the Region suffering from the fires, groups of Young Guard members are at work, and in Nizhny Novgorod, humanitarian aid is being collected continuously. Social Rehabilitation Center for Minors "Nadezhda"

« Users of the LiveJournal community "Charitable Aid for Victims of Wildfires in Russia" have discovered that the items that kindhearted people donate for those who lost their homes do not always reach their intended recipients.

Nizhny Novgorod bloggers write that one such suspicious collection point was set up at a certain "Social Rehabilitation Center for Minors 'Nadezhda.'"

"When I learned that they were collecting items for the victims, I immediately wondered what kind of kind-hearted people these were, so I went to the collection point," report the LiveJournal users.

"I saw that people were bringing everything, from rompers to household electronics. And then I noticed the following situation: in the evening, 'Gazelle' vans (gazelkas) periodically pull up to the home of the center's director and start unloading boxes marked 'SOCIAL AID NADEZHDA.'" The brave girl blogger did not stop at these observations and, under the pretext of offering help, arrived at the center, where she "saw with my own eyes how part of the aid is divided on the spot among the participants of the operation.

In front of me, 2 LCD TVs, 8 laptops, 5 camping tents, and 3 sleeping bag sets were divided up. When I took out my camera to photograph all this, they took it away from me, yelled at me, and I barely got out of there without injury, only twisting my ankle — I stumbled."

At the moment, Nizhny Novgorod bloggers have joined forces to thoroughly investigate the activities of the suspicious center with the help of law enforcement agencies.

On August 4, 2010, with the blessing of Archbishop George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas, a headquarters for organizing aid to victims of the forest fires was opened at the Vyksa Theological School (Vyksa, 33 Spartaka St.). The headquarters accepted material aid from the public; food, personal hygiene items, medicines, and dishes were in particularly short supply. The headquarters' telephone numbers: (83177) 3–22–58 and 3–88–66. The Vyksa Iveron Convent and the parishes of the deanery organized free hot meals for servicemen, firefighters, and volunteers involved in fighting the fires, including by traveling to the duty stations along two routes: to the village of Vilya and to the border areas of the Region.[3]

« I urge you to do what you can to help those affected by the fires. Bring clothing and basic necessities for people evacuated from the disaster zone to the public reception office of the Committee for the Protection of Nizhny Novgorod at 11 Studenaya Street (enter from the courtyard, follow the signs).
