Joint-Stock Company "Volga Shipping Company" (JSC "Volga-Flot") is one of Russia's largest shipping companies, founded in 1843.[3] Its head office is located in Nizhny Novgorod at 15A Markin Square.[4] The company specializes in freight transportation on Russia's inland waterways, in river–sea service, and on international maritime routes, holding a leading position in this market segment.[1]

Fleet and Scope of Operations

According to current data, the company's self-propelled fleet numbers 144 vessels with a total deadweight exceeding 600,000 tonnes, and annual cargo volumes amount to approximately 15 million tonnes.[4] Earlier figures cited more than 250 fleet units with a combined deadweight of over 1.4 million tonnes and annual cargo volumes of more than 14 million tonnes.[3]

The geographic scope of operations covers the basins of the Northwestern, Central, Volga, Azov–Don, Kama, and Belaya regions, with access to the coastal waters of the Baltic, Black, and Caspian Seas, as well as to Russia's northern ports and the Far North. The river–sea class fleet operates on routes to seaports in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.[3]

The principal categories of cargo carried include bulk and general cargo (mineral and chemical fertilizers, grain, timber, construction materials, coal, metal, sulfur), liquid cargo (crude oil, petroleum products, edible vegetable oils, liquid chemical cargo), as well as project and oversized cargo — equipment for the oil and gas, nuclear, wind energy, and other industries.[3] Regular clients include the largest Russian and international metallurgical enterprises, fertilizer producers, timber industry groups, and oil and gas companies; the bulk of transportation is carried out under long-term contracts.[3]

Structure and Subsidiaries

The company comprises the following ship-repair enterprises: JSC "Borremflot", JSC "Ship Repair Plant 'Pamyat Parizhskoy Kommuny'", JSC "Voznesenskaya Repair and Operations Fleet Base", JSC "Volzhskaya Fleet Technical Maintenance Base", as well as LLC "Volgo-Baltik Logistik", which specializes in multimodal transportation of general and project cargo.[4] JSC "Volga-Flot" is a major shareholder in a group of enterprises engaged in ship repair, modernization, and the construction of medium-tonnage vessels.[3]

The legal entity was registered on 24 March 1994; its authorized capital stands at 3.34 billion rubles. For the full year 2025, the company's revenue amounted to 13.8 billion rubles, with assets of 43.1 billion rubles.[5] Since December 2025, Dmitry Vladimirovich Pritula has served as General Director.[5]

Personnel and Corporate Policy

The steamship company maintains partnerships with specialized educational institutions. In particular, professional skills competitions are organized jointly with the Gorodetsky Gubernsky College: in 2024, the final of a ship's cook competition was held in Moscow, with the winner being Irina Trefilova from the motor vessel "Agat"; second place went to Galina Volchanskaya ("Nefrit"), and third to Maria Utkina ("Volgo-Don 139"). A special prize in the category "Striving for Professional Growth" was awarded to college student Yulia Finagina. The jury was chaired by Andrey Shmakov, head chef of the Moscow restaurant SAVVA, who himself began his career as a ship's cook.[2]

In 2026, the company concluded an agreement to train Moscow cadets under the Volga Steamship Company brand, and also expanded its fleet with new dry-cargo vessels — "Vladimir Yerygin" (August 2025) and "Boris Korolev" (October 2025).[1]
