Scientific Results
Chuvil'deyev's earliest work was devoted to the theory of structural superplasticity: from 1983 onward, together with V. N. Perevezentsev and V. V. Rybin, he published articles in the journal Poverkhnost' on grain-boundary defects and grain growth during superplastic deformation. This work culminated in the four-part "Theory of Structural Superplasticity" in Acta Metallurgica et Materialia (1992) — one of his most-cited publications [3].
His central research theme became non-equilibrium grain boundaries and diffusion along them. In 1996, Fizika Metallov i Metallovedenie published his series of articles on the micromechanisms of grain-boundary diffusion in metals and on deformation-stimulated grain-boundary self-diffusion [3]. This research formed the basis of his doctoral dissertation (1998) [4] and the monograph Non-Equilibrium Grain Boundaries in Metals: Theory and Applications (Moscow: Fizmatlit, 2004, 304 pp.) [3].
From the early 2000s, the theory was applied to nano- and microcrystalline (ultrafine-grained) metals produced by severe plastic deformation, primarily equal-channel angular pressing; V. I. Kopylov was a regular co-author in this work. Topics studied included the grain refinement limit, the limits of applicability of the Hall–Petch relationship, the simultaneous improvement of strength and ductility, and low-temperature superplasticity of magnesium alloys [3].
During the 2010s, Chuvil'deyev's laboratory worked on electric pulse (spark plasma) sintering of powders. On 21 May 2013, at the second scientific seminar "Advanced Technologies for Material Consolidation Using Electromagnetic Fields," he presented a paper entitled "Problems of Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Electric Pulse Plasma Sintering Process" [8]. The outcome was an article in Acta Astronautica (2015), a patent for nanostructured tungsten carbide products with high hardness and fracture toughness (2015), and the book Fundamentals of the Theory of Sintering of Metal Powders (2020) [3].
Industrial Collaboration
Chuvil'deyev's projects regularly reached the stage of industrial implementation [2][9]. He led contractual research agreements with RFNC-VNIIEF, OKBM named after I. I. Afrikantov, VNIINM named after A. A. Bochvar, the Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant, and other enterprises, and from 2014 to 2018 managed work under contract with the Foundation for Advanced Research [3].
According to NIFTI data for 2021, he is co-author of 15 patents and more than 40 know-how solutions; according to Argumenty i Fakty — Nizhny Novgorod (2026) — 11 patents and 27 know-how solutions [3][10]. These include methods for producing ultra-fine-grained structures in aluminum, copper, and titanium alloys, and rods made of nanocrystalline titanium for medical devices [3].
Publications and Bibliometrics
As of September 1, 2021, Chuvildeev had 371 publications, 2,527 citations, and an h-index of 22 according to RSCI; 186 publications, 1,267 citations, and an index of 16 in Scopus; 186 publications, 934 citations, and an index of 15 in Web of Science [3]. Biographical references describe him as the author of more than 100 scholarly works, one monograph, and five textbooks [6][11]. In 2024, he was included in Elsevier's ranking of the most cited scientists, and in 2025 — in that of Stanford University [2][10][5].

Scientific School and Students
Chuvildeev's school held the status of a leading scientific school of the Russian Federation: in 2014–2015 and 2016–2017, its work was supported by grants from the President of the Russian Federation [3]. According to Governor Gleb Nikitin, the scholar headed one of the strongest scientific schools in Russia and trained a constellation of talented researchers [12].
He taught special courses titled "The Engineering Language of Materials Science" and "Physics of Metals, Alloys, and Ceramics," lectured doctoral students on "Concepts of the Humanities and Natural Sciences," and directed the educational programme "Physics of Designed Materials: Metals, Alloys, and Ceramics" [3].
Among his students is Alexey Nokhrin: a graduate of the master's program at the Department of Physical Materials Science at UNN (2000), who defended his candidate's dissertation (2003) and doctoral dissertation (2014) under Chuvildeev's academic supervision, has headed the Materials Diagnostics Laboratory at NIFTI since 2009, and served as deputy head of the research school "Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials" [13]. In a 2013 report, Chuvildeev acknowledged the staff of NIFTI Laboratory No. 5 — Maxim Boldin, Nikita Sakharov, Alexey Nokhrin, Dmitry Kotkov, Sergey Shotin, Aleksandr Piskunov, Evgeniy Zharkov, and Viktor Tulovchikov [8]. Regular co-authors also include M. Yu. Gryaznov, O. E. Pirozhnikova, and E. S. Smirnova [3].
He chaired the Academic Council of NIFTI, served on dissertation councils at UNN and NSTU named after R. E. Alekseev, and was an expert for the RFBR, RSF, RAS, and the Skolkovo Foundation [3].
Lobachevsky Lab Science Park
Chuvildeev is the originator of the idea, founder, and academic director of the UNN Science Park "Lobachevsky Lab," and one of the founders of the Foundation for the Promotion of the Science Park's Development, established to popularize scientific knowledge among young people [1][2][3]. The park was established as a university division in 2014, and in autumn 2017 opened its own venue at Ulyanova Street, 10b, where lectures, festivals, Science Slams, film screenings, and discussions take place [7].
By the university's assessment, without Chuvildeev there would have been none of the hundreds of lectures, dozens of festivals, and science slams [2][5]. Members of the park's community noted that thanks to its director it became a space where city residents can get closer to science and its achievements [14].
Each of us has our own memories of the Park — lectures, conversations, meetings, people. But behind all of it is the person who once made it all possible. <…> If not for him, it wouldn't just be that there would be no Science Park. We would all be a little different

Death and Farewell
Vladimir Chuvildeev passed away on the morning of 5 September 2026 in Nizhny Novgorod, the day after his 68th birthday [2][10][14]. His death was announced on social media by Aleksey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the MIA "Statsionar-press"; several outlets cited the channel "Bokal presseka" [15][16][17][10][14]. Colleagues and students noted that he had left a significant mark not only on Russian science but on the lives of many people [14].
Governor Gleb Nikitin, in his message of condolence, recalled that the scholar had devoted more than 40 years to the university and had produced hundreds of fundamental works [12].
The civil memorial service and farewell took place on September 7, 2026; the funeral ceremony began at 11:00 at Bugrovskoe Cemetery [2][16][12][10].
People like this do not pass without leaving a trace. I grieve together with everyone
