The Research Institute of Physics and Technology (NIFTI) is a large research and teaching division of Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod (UNN), working since 1930. It is located at 23 Gagarin Avenue, building 3.[1]
History
NIFTI was founded on 8 August 1930 as an independent research institution of republican standing. In 1932 it joined Gorky State University and became GIFTI, the Gorky Research Institute of Physics and Technology attached to the university. Since 1990 it has been a division of Lobachevsky State University.[1] In 2017 an anniversary volume was published marking eighty-five years of the institute within the university.[2]
Structure and work
The institute comprises three departments with fifteen research laboratories. It is certified to the international standard ISO 9001-2001, holds a licence for space activity and permission to carry out work commissioned by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation.[1] NIFTI is equipped with modern analytical and technological instruments, including the ultra-high-vacuum Multiprobe RM complex (Omicron Nanotechnology GmbH).[1]
The university's physics faculty, NIFTI and the research and teaching centres "Physics of Solid-State Nanostructures" and "Nanotechnology" together form the "Physics" teaching and research complex. The centre "Physics of Solid-State Nanostructures" (originally the centre for scanning probe microscopy) was set up on 3 July 1998 under the programme "Basic Research and Higher Education in Russia" (BRHE) with support from the American Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF).[1]
Among the institute's lines of work are the development of ultra-wear-resistant ceramics and participation in the Army International Military-Technical Forum.[1]
Directors
From 1995 to August 2015 the institute was headed by O. N. Gorshkov, candidate of physical and mathematical sciences and associate professor. In 2016 the post passed to Vladimir Nikolayevich Chuvildeev, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences and professor, a materials physicist who founded a research school in materials science.[1][3] According to current university listings, the institute is headed by Alexey Nikolayevich Mikhailov, who also directs the centre "Physics of Solid-State Nanostructures" and the laboratory of memristor nanoelectronics.[3]
