Verkhniye Pechyory is a collective name for several microdistricts of Nizhegorodsky District, located on the southeastern edge of the city.

All of the Verkhniye Pechyory microdistricts are characterized by a predominance of residential buildings of various types, an absence of industrial and large manufacturing enterprises, business zones, and through roads, which is a typical sign of a "bedroom community" of a large city.

As of July 2006, the population of the microdistrict exceeded 40,000 people; however, because Verkhniye Pechyory is an outlying area toward which the development of the city of Nizhny Novgorod is directed, the Population of the microdistrict keeps growing substantially.

The total area of the microdistrict is 318.2 hectares, including 233.3 hectares transferred in 1995 from the lands of Kstovsky District. The prestige of the microdistrict accounts for its high housing prices.

Name and History

The word "Pechyory" (also spelled "Pechory" or "Pechery"), widely used in the names of geographic features and Christian religious structures, is thought by one account to derive from a modified form of the word "peshchery" (caves). The origin of the Nizhny Novgorod place names is linked to the founding in this area of the Pechersky Ascension Monastery, which, like many other early Orthodox churches, had a "cave" prototype, that is, one built in the form of earthen caves.

Originally, Verkhniye Pechyory was the name given to four microdistricts of the city of Gorky, laid out during city development planning in the 1970s and identified by sequential numbers.

Although there is no reliable evidence, the most likely explanation is that the name of the microdistricts is connected with the name of a village or sloboda (a settlement outside the old town) whose territory became part of the city and the site of modern development.

This assumption is supported by the fact that Verkhniye Pechyory sits at the top of the right (steep) bank of the Volga, while a few kilometers upstream, at the water's edge (that is, down below), lies the sloboda of Pechyory, which is still part of the city of Nizhny Novgorod today. Verkhniye Pechyory now consists of eight microdistricts. Nowadays the microdistrict numbers are given and mentioned only when they matter; in other situations people speak of a single common microdistrict, Verkhniye Pechyory. In colloquial speech the word "Verkhniye" (Upper) in the microdistrict's name is often dropped.

The norm for forming an adjective from the microdistrict's name has not settled. It may be written as a single word, "Verkhnepechyorsky," or as a compound, "Verkhne-Pechyorsky."

Components and Characteristics of the Buildings

Some blocks within the microdistrict are separated from one another by deep ravines, which determine the character of the architecture and the outline of the development.

The slopes of the ravines, where the soils are unstable, are dominated by private cottages or integrated low-rise development.

The designation "Verkhniye Pechyory" is, as a rule, not applied to areas of private housing. These areas bear either the historical names of the villages that once stood on those sites, or brand names proposed by the developers and designers of the respective blocks.

Blocks of modern integrated development adjacent to the Verkhniye Pechyory microdistrict are designated by brand names proposed by their developers and designers.

Thus, the boundaries and components of the microdistrict can now be considered finally settled and include:

Old Verkhniye Pechyory

Old Verkhniye Pechyory is the usual name for the territory of microdistricts No. 1 through No. 4, built up with multi-story apartment buildings in the 1970s. The blocks of old Verkhniye Pechyory have standard Soviet-era housing, consisting mainly of nine-story panel buildings. The architecture is characterized by monotony and standardization, since construction was carried out as a single complex and in a short time. They are separated from the new part of Verkhniye Pechyory by the Kasyanovsky Ravine.

Novye Verkhniye Pechyory

Novye Verkhniye Pechyory is the name given to the part of the microdistrict lying north of the Kasyanov Ravine. This part of the microdistrict was built up considerably later than the old part, owing to the general construction crisis that coincided with the socio-economic transformations of the mid-1980s to early 1990s. The architecture of Novye Verkhniye Pechyory is modern. The buildings are characterized by individually designed projects and bright, colorful finishes.

Division into microdistricts

Verkhniye Pechyory (as a complex of microdistricts) includes the following microdistricts:

  • Microdistrict I (bounded by Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, the Lopatin Ravine, the mouth of the Kova River (Starka), and Kompozitora Kasyanova Street).
  • Microdistrict II (bounded by Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, Brinskogo Street, the channel of the Kova River (Starka), and the Lopatin Ravine).
  • Microdistrict III (bounded by Kazan Highway, Brinskogo Street, Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, and Kompozitora Kasyanova Street).
  • Microdistrict IV (bounded by Kazan Highway, Germana Lopatina Street, Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, and Kompozitora Kasyanova Street).
  • Microdistrict V (bounded by Kazan Highway, Kasyanova Street, Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, and Bogdanovicha Street)
  • Microdistrict VI (low-rise development on the slope of the Kasyanov Ravine)[1]
  • Microdistrict VIII (bounded by Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, the Lopatin Ravine, and Nizhnepechyorskaya Street)
  • Pechyora Ridge (bounded by Kazan Highway, Bogdanovicha Street, and Nizhnepechyorskaya Street)

Adjacent districts of the city

To the north, Verkhniye Pechyory borders the Pechyora Valley microdistrict; to the west, the Sovetsky District of Nizhny Novgorod; to the south, the zone of modern integrated development known as "Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Sloboda"; and to the east, the village (sloboda) of Podnove, Aleksandrovskaya Sloboda, and the "FSB town," which consists mainly of houses built for employees of that agency.

Nature

Verkhniye Pechyory has several ravines. The ravines formed because of the softness of the rocks that make up the massif of the right bank of the Oka and the Volga, which makes them weak, loose, and easily eroded by rainwater and by the streams produced when snow melts. Groundwater also frequently contributes to the erosion.

Lopatinsky Ravine
It begins in the center of Old Verkhniye Pechyory, at the intersection of German Lopatin Street and Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, and widens toward the channel of the Kova (Starka). The floor of the ravine has a paved concrete pedestrian path. The descents from the residential blocks into the ravine are metal staircases. A sewage collector for the Verkhniye Pechyory microdistrict runs along the bottom of the ravine and empties into the Kova (Starka) River[2].

Kasyanovsky Ravine
It begins at Kazanskoye Highway and widens toward the channel of the Kova (Starka). The floor of the ravine has a two-lane road connecting the Verkhniye Pechyory microdistrict with the Kuznichikha microdistrict. In the area of Verkhne-Pechyorskaya Street, utilities are laid across the ravine along an overpass that is also used as a pedestrian crossing.

In 2007, construction began (at the contractor-selection stage) of a full-fledged pedestrian crossing over the ravine.

The landscaped slopes of Kasyanovsky Ravine, with their asphalted walking paths, serve as a recreation spot for residents, since Verkhniye Pechyory has no dedicated park areas.

Kova (Starka) River Valley
The Kova River flows along the bottom of a deep ravine that crosses Lopatinsky and Kasyanovsky Ravines, along the western boundary of the microdistrict. Because of systematic pollution of the river with household and industrial waste, its ecological condition is unsatisfactory, and it is not used as a recreation spot by Nizhny Novgorod residents.

Social and Community Infrastructure

Verkhniye Pechyory has been provided with comfortable living conditions and social amenities that meet all the main needs of its residents. At the same time, as of 2026, the opening of the new building of School No. 103 in Verkhniye Pechyory is being postponed: according to the builders, a significant portion of the funds was redirected to other purposes, and the facility will not be commissioned in 2027, as previously planned. Construction of the sports and recreation complex at 5 Lopatin Street in Verkhniye Pechyory has been frozen: the prepared project had not been reviewed or approved for several months as of October 2026.[1]

Transport infrastructure

Transport links to Verkhniye Pechyory within the city of Nizhny Novgorod are well developed.

Bus service is the predominant form of passenger transport.

Verkhniye Pechyory is the terminus of a large number of city bus routes.

Urban legends

  • I think it was in 1959(?) that Khrushchev came to Gorky to explain to the people of Gorky about "communism in 20 years." During his stay in G., a devastating landslide happened in Pechory. Correct me, those of you who know; back then disasters were never officially reported anywhere, but word among the people was that so much refuse had piled up at a homemade dump on the hillside that a gas mixture from the rotting waste exploded. And Nikita had to deal with this issue too, not just stand on the rostrum on Minin Sq. going on about communism, blah blah. [1] (archive)
