The "Tsiklon" was a second-generation, two-deck seagoing hydrofoil gas-turbine ship, designed by the Central Design Bureau for Hydrofoil Ships named after R. E. Alexeyev).[2] It was laid down in 1984, launched in Feodosia in 1987, and remained the only completed ship of the project: the second hull was never finished. [1]
A two-deck gas-turbine ship
The "Tsiklon" combined two rarities: two decks and a gas-turbine plant — a pairing Soviet hydrofoil shipbuilding attempted only once before, on the river vessel Burevestnik (ship))))" of 1964. The ship was conceived as the flagship of a new generation of sea routes. [1] According to the Alekseyev Central Design Bureau, the "Tsiklon" carried 250 passengers and reached a speed of 42 knots, while seagoing hydrofoils of this generation could operate in waves up to 3.5 meters high. Only the lead hull was ever completed. The second remained on the slipway, and with it the whole line of development was left unfinished: by the early 1990s orders for large hydrofoils had ceased. [1]
