On 15 September 2026, at a session of the city Duma's commission on municipal services, it became known that the government of Moscow was handing over fifty pieces of municipal road machinery to Nizhny Novgorod for winter street maintenance, as part of interregional cooperation.[1] This was announced by the head of the city's department of transport and road management Elena Kuznetsova.[2]

The city's fleet

In winter about 530 pieces of specialised machinery will maintain the street and road network of Nizhny Novgorod, not counting loaders and tipper trucks for removing snow. Of these 112 are combined road machines; 427 units are in municipal ownership and another 103 are provided by subcontractors.[3] The total length of the city's street and road network as of the second quarter of 2026 is 2,630 kilometres, including the Kstovo District (927 km), with 1,552 stopping points.[4]

The machinery now available is not enough to meet the standard: by the city administration's calculations the city needs 863 units, including 207 combined road machines.[3] At the time of the session 387 of the 530 vehicles (73 per cent) were ready for winter work; by 1 November the figure was to reach 95 per cent, with the remaining 5 per cent to be converted just before temperatures fall below zero, as they are still in use for summer road maintenance. The switch to winter maintenance was planned for 1 November.[3]

Renewing the fleet, 2021–2026

Between 2021 and 2025 the city bought 347 pieces of specialised road machinery and attachments, including seventy combined road machines.[4] In 2026 six water-pumping vehicles were added.[2] A further 122 units were bought under a finance lease using a DOM.RF subsidy — delivery was to be completed by 30 September, and by the time of the session 43 vehicles had already arrived.[3] A contract for another 28 combined road machines, to be delivered by 2 November, was being finalised.[4]

The fifty vehicles from Moscow thus became part of a large-scale renewal of the fleet that has been running for several years. The machinery is intended for street cleaning and road maintenance in winter.[1]
