JSC "Termal", colloquially "Termal Plant" or simply Termal) — an enterprise that manufactures water heaters. Nizhny Novgorod residents know it primarily for its large swimming pool. Official name: CJSC "Concern Termal".[1] Termal is also the name of a public transport stop of the same name, located before the interchange of Larina. – Gagarin Avenue – Myzinskiy Bridge.
The concern's clients include the Naval Forces of the Russian Federation, Russian Railways, and other major customers.[2][3]
Overview
Termal is a machine-building enterprise that has been operating in the shipbuilding industry for more than 150 years. The plant develops and manufactures products in three main areas:[4]
- Process equipment for food service establishments;
- Electrothermal equipment for vessels;
- Equipment for railway transport.
History of the Plant
- 1857. Ivan Savelyevich Kolchin, a second-guild Moscow merchant, began constructing a plant on the bank of the Volga; by 1861 it comprised five buildings, one steam engine, and 28 machine tools.[5][3][6]
- 1870. A young specialist without a diploma, Vasily Kalashnikov (later a well-known scholar), was taken on at the plant.[5][7]
- 1872. V.I. Kalashnikov, already appointed as the plant's mechanic, set himself the goal of building a new-design compound steam engine for riverboats. That same year, Kalashnikov installed this engine on his employer's steamboat "Istobenyets," later renamed "Arzamas." The brilliant experiment brought the 22-year-old mechanic of the Kolchin plant worldwide renown, as he had outpaced leading foreign shipbuilding firms in this field by 14–15 years.[5][7][8]
- 1883. Kalashnikov invented a burner nozzle for more economical combustion of fuel oil in furnaces.[7]
- 1885. The burner nozzle invented by Kalashnikov in 1883 was exhibited at the Nizhny Novgorod Handicrafts Exhibition. Vasily Ivanovich was awarded a gold medal of the Russian Technical Society for it.[5][8]
- 1886. The steamboat "Vsevolod" left the plant, fitted with a triple-expansion steam engine. The innovator was the first to create compound triple-expansion steamboat engines with outputs of 400, 800, and even 1,000 horsepower, which enhanced the role of river transport on the central artery of Russia. After Kolchin's death, his entire estate passed to Ustin Savvich Kurbatov, a first-guild merchant from Kazan, under whom the plant underwent further development.[5][8]
- 1892. Pyotr Andreyevich Zalomov arrived at the plant — one of the most productive worker-revolutionaries in Nizhny Novgorod.[5]
- 1896. Following the All-Russian Nizhny Novgorod Exhibition, the Kurbatov Plant's signboard was adorned with the image of the state coat of arms of Russian Empire.[5]
- 1900. The workers of the Kurbatov Plant built a full hundred magnificent steamships — among them the Sarapulets, the Chechenets, and the Dobryy, on which young Alyosha Peshkov served as a cabin boy.[5]
- 1908. Vasiliy Ivanovich Kalashnikov died.[8]
- March 1917. At the workers' demand, the Menshevik council of deputies introduced an eight-hour working day.[5]
- 1918. A new oil barge named Seryozha appeared in the plant's backwater harbor. The provincial party committee tasked the plant with refitting and arming it with artillery — the floating fleet was to join the combat strength of the Volga Military Flotilla as quickly as possible.[5]
- 24 April 1923. The plant was renamed the "Mechanical Plant named after Vladimir Ulyanov," where production began of steamship engines, steam hoisting machines for mines and ore works, various steam pumps, cast iron and copper castings, and other goods.[5]
- December 1925. A ceremonial laying of the keels of three barge-lighters, each with a load capacity of three thousand tons, took place. The Ulyanovtsy workers made the plant's first-ever socialist pledge — one that struck observers with its boldness: to deliver the vessels to the Volga boatmen in time for the 1926 navigation season.[5]
- 1941–1943. The Ulyanovtsy workers' main product is manufactured — the "A-50" aviation incendiary bomb.[5]
- 1970. The plant moved to a new site, with new buildings of glass, steel, and concrete, and a new name — [3][5]
- 1977. The plant introduced CNC metalworking machine tools. Work also began on developing new product lines — consumer goods. Work that had begun in 1975 and 1976 continued: the introduction of electropolishing for parts made of stainless steel and brass, and the replacement of conventional electrolytic chromium plating with a method of applying chromium from organometallic compounds in a vacuum. Over 86% of the plant's consumer goods left the factory bearing the State Quality Mark. These included electric kettles, samovars, and the compact "Souvenir" boiling sets.[5]
- 1991–1995. The collapse of the Soviet Union. Fleet construction is suspended. At Termal, workshop operations are scaled back and the production of new goods comes to an end.[5][9]
- March 2002. Termal gained a new General Director, Vladimir Anatolevich Bulanov. Thanks to substantial investment and the efforts of specialists at all levels, production volumes began to grow. The number of jobs at the enterprise doubled.[5][2]
- 2003. Modernization of flow-through water heaters and boilers began.[5]
- 2007. The first serial deliveries of PEK-6 stoves for dining cars to the Novorossiysk Car Repair Plant, the Voronezh Car Repair Plant, and Lithuania.[5]
- 2008. Development of KKV-13 boilers for railways began.[5]
- 2009. Creation of the PE-4Zh and PE-6K stove series and heating boilers for railways, and the start of serial deliveries. At the "Pir Industriya Gostepriimstva" exhibition, new products were presented for the first time: KEND 100-03, 50-03; KEND 100-04; BE 20/3.[5]
- January 2010. Launch of production of the modernized series of continuously operating electric boilers KEND 100-03, 50-03; 100-04 and fill-type electric tanks BE 15/3, 20/3, 25/3, 30/3.[5]
2010, August Production of new products has been launched — PKS-series steam convection stations for dining cars. The equipment is successfully supplied for the needs of JSC Russian Railways.[5]
2010, September Termal Group of Companies was joined by Chayka Limited Liability Company and the Tekhnika v Belom retail chain.[5]
