The State Archive of Nizhny Novgorod Region (its official name is the State Treasury Institution "State Archive of Nizhny Novgorod Region") is a regional archival institution with a branch in Arzamas. It holds the documentary collections of organizations, institutions, and private individuals connected with the history of the Arzamas Uyezd and adjacent territories.
Arzamas Branch
The Arzamas State Archive received its first collections in the early 1930s. In particular, the records of the Ekaterininskaya Girls' Gymnasium were placed in storage on October 2, 1933; the archive's accession records do not indicate where they came from. The archive holds the collections of pre-revolutionary institutions of the Arzamas Uyezd: military-administrative, financial and tax bodies, peasant self-government bodies, and others. The pre-revolutionary collections also include records of bodies and institutions of the Russian Orthodox Church, industrial enterprises, and educational institutions.[1]
Composition of the Collections
The holdings include Fond No. 118 of the Ekaterininskaya Girls' Gymnasium (1,852 storage units for 1868–1932, including 1936 files with copies of certificates issued in place of lost originals); Fond No. 21 of the Office of the Arzamas Uyezd Military Commander (Inventory No. 1, covering 1865 to 1918); Fond No. 36 of the Tax Inspector of the 2nd District of the Arzamas Uyezd (Inventory No. 1, 1896 to 1915); and Fond No. 4 of the Panovo Volost Administration of the Arzamas Uyezd (Inventory No. 1, 1862 to 1918).
The archive was founded in 1924 and has undergone a number of reorganizations.[1]
Until 1970, the archive acquired documents from 22 districts in the south of Nizhny Novgorod Region.[1]
As of the latest data update, the archive held 3,228 fonds and over 412,228 files; the earliest document dates from 1681.[1]
In the 2010s, the archive was headed by Aleksey Aleksandrovich Guryanov.[1]
