Nizhny Novgorod is an active Volga Region with a well-developed culture of mass and professional sport. The city regularly hosts major competitions in swimming, running, and other disciplines, attracting participants from across Russia and abroad.

Mass Running

One of the city's main annual running events is the night run, held along the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment. In 2025 it drew a record number of participants — 6,000 people, competing over distances of 2, 5, and 10 km. Nizhny Novgorod Region's Minister of Sport, Dmitry Kabaylo, took part in the event.[2]

In June 2025 the city held the RUTS cultural run, dedicated to the The History of Nizhny Novgorod from the 19th century to the present day.[2]

In May 2025, the 11th charity half-marathon "Run, Hero!" took place, gathering around 20,000 participants. Athletes competed over distances of 5, 10, and 21.1 km; children took part in the run alongside adults.[3]

Open Water

In July 2026, the jubilee, 10th, international X-WATERS Volga swim took place in the waters of the Volga (disambiguation) and Oka. The event ran for two days and included distances of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 km. The 10 km distance in Nizhny Novgorod was contested for the first time in the tournament's history. In total, more than three thousand swimmers from various cities across Russia and other countries took part in the competition.[1]

In the men's 10 km event, Alexander Kaluzhsky (Moscow) won with a time of 1:40:25.5, while among women Zoya Vozmilova (Moscow) finished first with a time of 1:47:06.2. Nizhny Novgorod athlete Anastasia Korzh won bronze in the women's 10 km swim. Over shorter distances, Nizhny Novgorod representatives Ivan Balenkov (bronze, 3 km) and Yaroslava Shalunova (silver in the 2 km and first place in the 1 km) also finished among the medalists.[1]
