The Seraphim of Sarov Spiritual and Educational Center is a three-story building in the village of Diveevo in Nizhny Novgorod Region, construction of which began in January 2021 and was completed by 2026. The center was built as part of the "Arzamas — Diveevo — Sarov" pilgrimage and tourism cluster and is among the key facilities of the region's religious and cultural infrastructure.[1][2]

Construction and the Laying of the Foundation Stone

Construction of the center began in January 2021. The client is the autonomous nonprofit organization "Management Company for the Development of the Sarov–Diveevo Cluster".[1] On April 24, 2021, when the building's foundation had been laid and the monolithic columns and basement walls erected, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko, Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin, and Metropolitan George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas placed a capsule containing a commemorative charter into the base of the building under construction.[1]

The three-story building is designed to house studios for gold embroidery, icon painting, painting, and the fundamentals of bell-ringing, as well as choral singing and Orthodox architectural modeling, along with a lecture hall on the history of Orthodox culture and rooms for 94 pilgrims.[1]

Place in the "Arzamas — Diveevo — Sarov" Cluster

Construction of the center proceeded in parallel with other facilities of the cluster: the restoration of the Voskresensky Cathedral and the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Arzamas, the construction of the Holy Gates and the improvement of the adjacent square and road in Diveevo, and the restoration of buildings in the ensemble of the Holy Dormition Men's Monastery in Sarov.[2] At the foundation-laying ceremony, Dmitry Chernyshenko described Diveevo as an Orthodox center of world significance and called the spiritual and educational center a new point of attraction for pilgrims and tourists.[1]

Completion and Current State

Governor Gleb Nikitin reported the completion of the construction of the center to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia during his primatial visit to the Nizhny Novgorod Metropolitanate. The meeting took place on August 1, 2026, in Diveevo; it was also attended by Igor Komarov, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Volga Federal District, and Metropolitan George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas.[2] The visit was timed to coincide with the Seraphim celebrations — the festival marking the 35th anniversary of the second discovery of the relics of Saint Seraphim of Sarov and the resumption of monastic life at the Diveevo Monastery.[2] At the same meeting, the governor reported that by 2026 about 700 churches had been restored across Nizhny Novgorod Region as a whole.[2]

The 2026 Seraphim celebrations in Diveevo were marked by one more anniversary: the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Mill Community (Melnichnaya Community) at the Seraphim-Diveevo Monastery.[3]

During Governor Nikitin's report on the cluster at the meeting with Patriarch Kirill, it was specified that, alongside the construction of the center, work on the monastery wall is also continuing in Diveevo.[4]
