The Sormovo Confectionery Factory is a confectionery enterprise in Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1937 and located in the Sormovo District at 10 Bazarnaya Street. It is the leading confectionery producer in Nizhny Novgorod Region and the only enterprise in the region that carries out primary processing of cocoa beans.[3] Since 2003 it has been part of the "United Confectioners" holding company.[3]
History and Production Structure
The factory was established in 1937.[2] Over the years of operation, the enterprise has developed four main production shops covering seven product categories: loose and prepackaged candies, chocolate, wafers, boxed chocolates, cookies, zefir (marshmallow-like confection), and pryaniki (spiced gingerbread cookies) — about 200 items in all.[3] The enterprise operates 13 production lines and sections, and its total workforce is 611 people. Annual output reaches 20 thousand tons of finished products.[3]
The factory produces cocoa butter on site: it is not deodorized and retains the natural taste and aroma of cocoa in the finished products.[3] The enterprise has implemented and certified a food safety management system under the international FSSC 22000 scheme, recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).[3]
Product Range and Brands
Among the factory's best-known brands are the marshmallow treat "Obozhayka," the wafers "Korovka," "Lyubimye," "Artek," and "Appetitki," the chocolates "Shokolatio" and "Sormovo," the "Skazka" chocolate series in 15 g bars for children, and the "Alenka" chocolate, including a version for export to the Chinese market.[3] The company's registered trademarks include "Magiya chuvstv" (Magic of Feelings), "Magiya tsveta" (Magic of Color), "Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka," "Rus Troyka," and others.[2] A well-developed distribution network allows the factory to sell its products not only in the region but also abroad.[3] Every year the factory wins city tenders and supplies New Year gifts for Nizhny Novgorod educational institutions.[3] The company's branded retail chain consists of "Alyonka" stores.[3]
Museum and Tour Activities
A museum of the company's history operates on the factory grounds. Tour operators offer schoolchildren in grades 3–11 a tour program lasting about 1.5 hours, which includes a visit to the museum and exhibition display and one of the production workshops, as well as a tasting of products straight from the conveyor and a sweet gift at the end.[1] The program covers the history of confectionery production, the technology of making sweets, and career guidance.[1]
