Smirnov Sergei Ivanovich (b. 17 February 1941) — general director of JSC FSUE "Research Laboratory for Materials Testing". Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor.

Education

Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the Volga State Academy of Water Transport, 1967, specialty — "ship machinery and mechanisms".

Previous Places of Work

From 1967 to 1981 he worked at the Gorky Institute of Water Transport Engineers (GIIVT) — junior researcher (1967–1971), assistant (1971–1975), senior lecturer (1975–1982), deputy dean (1975–1980), head of the academic department (1980–1981). Main Facts of Activity

Organized joint laboratories with the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the A.A. Blagonravov Institute of Machine Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences, JSC "Verkhnevolzhsknefteprovod", and the American-Soviet firm "Globaltest" for developing methods to protect the natural environment by reducing accidents at potentially environmentally hazardous facilities (especially on large-diameter trunk oil pipelines). One of the creators of the first vessels in the USSR — a launch and a seiner-trawler — fitted with hydrostatic power transmission to the propeller (without a shaft line), and of the transmission mechanisms for testing them; complexes of instruments for diagnosing the stressed state of a ship's hull and systems for signaling dangerous stresses within it; homogenizers for liquid and viscous petroleum products, installed on vessels of the Volga United River Shipping Company and the Kama River Shipping Company; three generations of loading complexes for testing elements of large-diameter trunk oil pipelines for low-cycle fatigue strength; testing procedures, including acceptance procedures, for the composite-sleeve pipeline repair system using British Gas technology; a rig for simulating the loads that arise in a special item as it moves over rough terrain. Holds 20 inventions put into industrial use.
