001nn.ru — the website of the Nizhny Novgorod telephone directory service "001," whose main page in 2004 consisted not of text but of a Flash animation on a blue background [1]. The directory service did not hold on to its domain for long: the address then went on to live at least four other lives — from an unnamed placeholder and advertising for escort services to a shop selling "more than 9,823 products" about nothing in particular and a bookmaker's mirror site complete with untouched Lorem Ipsum placeholder text [2][3][4][5], before finally becoming a standard parking page in 2020 [6].
The directory service and its website
The "001" service operated on a principle familiar since Soviet times through the "09" number: a free number, an on-duty operator, and a card index of city addresses, phone numbers, and prices — only now as a private business in post-Soviet Nizhny Novgorod. The earliest surviving snapshot of the site, dated December 16, 2004 — the same year the city hosted the Day of the Nizhny Novgorod Internet competition — displays a splash screen bearing the phrase "Telephone directory 001. Free, around the clock. Goods, services, leisure." The same phrase is repeated word for word in the page title, description, and keywords: a search-optimization technique typical of that era [1].
The page itself contained no text: the HTML merely embedded a file called sprav001.swf on a blue background (#269ccd) via a Macromedia Flash object tag, and required Flash Player version 5 — an obsolete technology that has left the actual content of the animation unpreserved in the archive [1]. In the page's source code, its authors left a signature — "Programming and concept by Almadesta LLC, Repin Dmitry Nikolayevich" — a practice common in the early-2000s Runet of signing markup directly in the comments [1]. A similar niche in the city was occupied by the The Nizhny Novgorod Directory" hosted on free public hosting — both were part of the address books of the Nizhny Novgorod Internet in the mid-2000s [1].
After the directory: three other lives of the domain
By 2009, no trace of the directory service remained on the site: the domain was temporarily occupied by a nearly empty placeholder with no meaningful content [2].
For at least several years — from 2011 through 2016–2017 at minimum — the domain was occupied by sites advertising intimate services in Nizhny Novgorod; these pages had no connection whatsoever to the original directory service or its former audience [3][7]. In addition to the advertising pages, the site accumulated dozens of articles on historical topics — "about geishas," "about Rus," "about Babylon," "about pimping" — apparently for search-engine optimization purposes rather than for any genuine interest in the subjects [7].
By May 2017 the nature of the content had shifted: the main page presented itself as an online shop with the tagline "We have more than 9,823 products," while inside were hundreds of random search phrases jumbled together with no connection to one another [4].
- "pictures of winter sports for kindergarten"
- "how to join silk threads while knitting"
- "what is the alkaline electrolyte density in a 10 nkbn-3.5 battery"
- "children's presentation for a boy for a competition"
| Year | What was on the site |
|---|---|
| 2009 | empty placeholder with no content [2] |
| 2011–2014 | advertisements for adult services [3][7] |
| 2015–2017 | product spam about nothing — "more than 9,823 items" [4] |
| 2018 | redirect to p-cos.ru, and from there — to luxpoint.ru [8][9] |
| 2018–2019 | mirror of the bookmaker "Leon" [5] |
| 2020 | standard hosting parking page [6] |
A Redirect to Nowhere
Even earlier, in April 2018, the domain briefly hosted a faceless template website on the theme of insurance and real estate: the archive from that period preserves images with names such as "published_businessman-collage", "published_insurance-agency", and "published_real-estate" — a standard set from a stock website builder [10].
On August 9, 2018, 001nn.ru began redirecting to p-cos.ru — but that too turned out to be merely an intermediate stop: earlier that same year, p-cos.ru had itself pointed onward to luxpoint.ru, meaning it was simply another link in a chain of placeholder domains rather than a standalone site with its own content [8][9].
By November 2018, the redirect had given way to actual content: a mirror of the bookmaker "Leon" appeared on 001nn.ru, complete with a logo and sections titled "Products and Services", "Car Insurance", "Property Owner's Insurance", and "Vacancies" — while alongside the betting advertisements the boilerplate filler text remained untouched [5].
The last preserved snapshot, dated October 27, 2020, is no longer a website at all but a line of automatic redirection to a page on the hosting service simplege.ru — a typical parking page for domains with no content [6].
