The Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod Region is the official list of rare and endangered species of animals, plants, and fungi found within the region. The document records species requiring protection at the regional level and serves as the basis for environmental policy in the region.
Species listed in the regional Red Data Book
Among the birds included in the regional list is the Eurasian scops owl, recorded in the Peremilovo Hills. In the Artemovsky Meadows near the village of Afonino, more than 200 bird species have been recorded, a number of which are included in the regional Red Data Book; the rare inhabitants of these places include the common tern, black-necked grebe, and penduline tit.
The regional list differs from the federal one: some species are protected only at the regional level. For example, the Russian desman and the little tern, which live in the Peremilovo Hills, are listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation, whereas the Eurasian scops owl from the same area is listed only in the regional book.
