The reconstruction of Sormovskiy Park is a large-scale renovation project for the culture-and-recreation park in the Sormovo District of Nizhny Novgorod, launched in 2026 and planned through 2031. The park covers 82 hectares and is one of the largest in the city; a significant portion of its grounds is occupied by a pine forest.[1] Sormovskiy Park holds the status of a cultural heritage site, which necessitates multi-stage approvals for all planned works.[2]

What Is Planned

The reconstruction concept provides for modernization of the road infrastructure, development of new circulation routes and pedestrian pathways, and upgrading of lighting. Within the park, construction of children's play complexes and sports facilities is planned, along with modernization of the amusement zone and restoration of cultural and historical sites.[1][2] Funding for the works is expected to come from a private investor — according to the general director of Sormovskiy Park LLC, Dmitry Vorobyov, the investor has already been identified.[2]

Timeline and Approvals

Dmitry Vorobyov announced the reconstruction plans on September 15, 2026, at a meeting of the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma ecology commission.[1][2] Development of the design and cost documentation is scheduled for October–November 2026. Since the park is a cultural heritage site, all activities must receive approval from the relevant authorities, which will determine the final timeline. According to the roadmap, the reconstruction is planned to be completed in 2031.[1][2] Deputies at the conclusion of the meeting proposed holding an on-site working session in the park itself to review the available materials and refine the roadmap.[2]

Expert Comments

During the commission's discussions, experts drew attention to a number of infrastructure problems. Honored Ecologist of the Russian Federation Klara Romanova pointed out the absence of a centralized sewage system: the septic tanks currently in the park, in her assessment, do not function properly — in particular, the equipment becomes buried under snow in winter. She called for a central drainage system to be made a mandatory part of the reconstruction project.[1] The head of the Dront Ecocenter, Askhat Kayumov, drew attention to the sharp increase in the number of food service outlets in the park in recent years, noting that under current legislation such establishments are not permitted in parks. He also expressed concern about the presence of a bathhouse and a ropes course on the grounds, the structures of which are fastened to trees, and called for a reduction in the number of "eateries" in favor of sports facilities and areas for quiet recreation.[1]

Context

Sormovskiy Park is among the priority sites for improvement in Nizhny Novgorod: the city's Mayor Shalabayev Yuri previously named it as one of three parks requiring first-priority redevelopment, alongside Avtozavodskiy Park and the 777th Anniversary Park.[1]
