A pump track is a specialized sports course consisting of alternating hills, dips, and berms, on which riders maintain momentum without pedaling — through body "pumping." The courses are suitable for cyclists, skateboarders, rollerbladers, and scooter riders. In Nizhny Novgorod, pump tracks have been built since 2019 as elements of public space improvement under federal programs, as well as through private investment.

History of Its Appearance in Nizhny Novgorod

The first pump track in Nizhny Novgorod opened in 2019 in Kanavinsky Square as part of landscaping works. According to the then head of the city Vladimir Panov, young athletes themselves actively participated in designing the course, which allowed significant adjustments to the original plan. The contract for completing the square's landscaping was signed with the company SK Stroyservis; the contractor's director, Andrey Molchin, confirmed the project handover date of September 2, 2019. The works were funded under the "Forming a Comfortable Urban Environment" program of the national project "Housing and Urban Environment."[2]

In 2020, the design bureau FK-Ramps, commissioned by the holding INGKA Centres, designed and built a skate park and asphalt pump track as part of the new public space MEGA-Park, located on the site of a former parking lot in front of the MEGA-Nizhny Novgorod shopping center (address: Volga Highway, 5, Fedyakovo). The total area of the facility was 4,130 m², and the construction period was 28 days. The asphalt track configuration was developed jointly with the Slovenian company Alliance ASE; the riding surface was laid in two layers of fine-grained asphalt, and a drainage system was provided. The concrete skate park was constructed using the shotcrete method on a monolithic slab. In addition to the pump track and skate park, the space includes a streetball court, a CrossFit complex, a circular cycle path, architectural lighting, and a separate waste collection system.[6]

Further Expansion

In August 2024, a pump track became part of a new landscaped space on Kosmicheskaya Street: a multifunctional sports court for basketball and tennis, a children's play area, a fenced dog zone, benches, and pergolas also appeared there, along with about 100 new lamp posts. Nizhny Novgorod residents chose this area for improvement under the "Forming a Comfortable Urban Environment" program — more than 5,000 people voted for it.[3]

In the same month, to mark the 100th anniversary of Sormovo District, a new multifunctional sports area with a pump track was opened on Korablestroliteley Avenue in the Korabli residential complex. A field for mini-football and basketball, exercise equipment, a table tennis table, a pump track, and a walking path were set up on the previously vacant lot.[4]

In August 2026, a pump track became one of the key features of a new square covering approximately 15,000 square meters on Cosmonaut Komarov Street in Leninsky District. The square was laid out on the site of a former vacant lot used as an unauthorized parking area in a neighborhood with a population of around 10,000 people. The territory also features a basketball court, table tennis tables, swings, and walking paths; a three-tier lighting system of 48 light points was installed. The landscaping was carried out under the national project "Infrastructure for Life." Mayor Shalabayev Yuri, who attended the opening, announced a second phase of development for the area.[1][5]
