In 1958, Pugin graduated from the Pavlovo Industrial Technical School. He graduated from the technical school with honors, after which he was assigned to the Gorky Automobile Plant and began work as a machine operator on August 5, 1958.[2] In 1967, he graduated from the A. A. Zhdanov Gorky Polytechnic Institute with a degree in "automobiles and tractors" and the qualification of "mechanical engineer." Pugin completed the Gorky Polytechnic Institute in the evening department, combining his studies with work at the plant.[3][1]

In 2008, the Nizhny Novgorod publishing house "Kvarts" released Pugin's book of memoirs and reflections, "50 Years with the Gorky Automobile Plant," running to 304 pages.[1]

Pugin Nikolay Andreyevich (born June 30, 1940, in the selo of Mukhanovo, Sosnovsky District, Gorky Region.[1]) is the president of the open joint-stock company "GAZ," a full member of the Russian Academy of Engineering and the International Academy of Engineering. He is a laureate of the USSR State Prize in science and technology and of the Nizhny Novgorod Prize. He served as a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Nizhny Novgorod Region for two terms.

Author of numerous publications in the periodical press. Winner of the "Best Manager of Russia" competition held by the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. Under his leadership, OJSC GAZ has been carrying out, since 1994, reforms aimed at mastering market-based methods of management and expanding cooperation with the world's leading companies. In record time, production was established of a family of fundamentally new vehicles: the "GAZelle," the "Sobol," the "Sobol-Barguzin," and the "Sadko." A modernized passenger car, the "Volga GAZ-3110," was put into production, and production of a new-generation car, the "Volga GAZ-3111," was begun. Production of modern, competitive "GAZ-560" diesel engines was organized under license from the Austrian company STEYR.

At his initiative and with his financial support, the Church of Saint Tatiana and an Orthodox cultural and educational center were built. Laureate of the USSR State Prize in Science and Technology. The USSR State Prize was awarded to Pugin in 1985 for the creation and introduction into production of universal automatic molding lines for manufacturing cast blanks.[3] Laureate of the Peter the Great National Prize. Awarded the "Best Manager of Russia" diploma.

Awarded the Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the "Badge of Honor," and "For Merit to the Fatherland" of the II and III degrees, as well as the medals "For Labor Distinction" and "For Valiant Labor."

The title "Honorary Citizen of the City of Nizhny Novgorod" was conferred by Resolution No. 38 of the City Duma of the city of Nizhny Novgorod dated June 23, 1999.

During his time at GAZ, Pugin was a deputy of the Council of the Union of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 11th convocation (1984–1989) from Gorky Region, and also a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU (1986–1990).[3]
