The Nizhny Novgorod–Bor Ferry was a vehicle ferry across the Volga connecting Nizhny Novgorod with the city of Bor. It operated during the navigation season; service was suspended in 2021, and in 2022 the ferry permanently ceased operations following the opening of a new bridge crossing.[1]

Route and Vessels

The landing stage on the Nizhny Novgorod side was located near the Aleksandrovskiy Sad hotel; the landing stage on the Bor side was situated just downstream from the canal, at the site of a former passenger pier.[1] The ferry was served by single-deck vessels SP-18 and SP-36 with a combined load capacity of 90 tonnes; each vessel could carry up to 30 passenger cars or up to 20 trucks, with the captain making the final loading decision. From 2018 onward, only one vessel made the crossings.[1]

Operating Hours and Schedule

The ferry operated from May–June through the end of the navigation season, daily from 7:00 to 22:00. On weekdays (Monday through Thursday) departures ran on a fixed schedule at approximately 40-minute intervals, with additional sailings added during morning and evening peak hours. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays the ferry ran without a fixed timetable at a maximum interval of 30 minutes; when vehicle queues were large, operating hours were extended.[2]

Closure

In 2021 the ferry did not operate — the vessel's owner refused to continue running it, as reported by the administration of the Bor urban district.[1] In 2022 the authorities officially explained their decision not to resume ferry service by citing the opening of a new parallel bridge from Nizhny Novgorod to Bor and the new Neklyudovo–Zolotovo interchange: in the administration's assessment, these facilities provide the necessary traffic capacity and render an additional ferry crossing redundant.[1]
