The Nizhny Novgorod Transport Prosecutor's Office is a specialized body of the prosecution service that is part of the Volga Transport Prosecutor's Office and oversees compliance with transport legislation in Nizhny Novgorod Region. Its remit covers rail, water, and other modes of transport.

Activities

The prosecutor's office conducts inspections following transport accidents and safety violations. In November 2022, the Nizhny Novgorod Transport Prosecutor's Office launched an inspection of compliance with the legislation on traffic safety and the operation of rail transport in connection with a railcar derailment at the Nizhny Novgorod-Moskovsky station of the Gorky Railway.[3] According to preliminary data, at around 11:20 on October 7, 2022, while a commuter passenger train was being moved into the car repair depot, one railcar derailed at a switch frog on a track in the Kanavinsky District. There were no passengers on the train, and no injuries or overturned cars were reported. The assistant to the Nizhny Novgorod Transport Prosecutor, an investigative task force of the Nizhny Novgorod Linear Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for Transport, and an investigator of the Nizhny Novgorod Transport Investigations Division of the Central Interregional Investigative Department for Transport of the Investigative Committee of Russia went to the scene.[3]

In October 2026, the prosecutor's office opened an inspection into the grounding of two vessels at once — the tanker Konstantinovsk and tug No. 1213 with a barge — on the Volga near the Gorodets hydroelectric complex on the night of October 3. The purpose of the inspection was to assess compliance with inland water transport safety requirements; depending on its findings, prosecutorial response measures were to be taken if grounds existed.[1]

Place in the Transport Prosecution System

The Nizhny Novgorod Transport Prosecutor's Office operates as part of the Volga Transport Prosecutor's Office, which is headed by the Volga Transport Prosecutor.[2] Similar regional transport prosecutor's offices exist in other constituent entities of the Volga Federal District, including Mordovia, Udmurtia, and Ulyanovsk and other regions of the district.[2]
