The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Mental Health Center named after P. P. Kashchenko (GBUZ NO "NOKTsPZ") is the leading specialized psychiatric institution of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, located in Nizhny Novgorod. It was formed as a result of the reorganization of the region's psychiatric services through the merger of several institutions; prior to the reorganization it operated under the name "Nizhny Novgorod Regional Psychoneurological Hospital No. 1 named after P. P. Kashchenko," at 12a Kashchenko Street.[1][2]

Reorganization

During the reorganization of psychiatric and psychoneurological care in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, four institutions were incorporated into the Center: Clinical Psychiatric Hospital No. 1 of Nizhny Novgorod, Psychiatric Hospital No. 2 of Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod Regional Psychoneurological Hospital No. 3, and the Dzerzhinsky Psychoneurological Dispensary.[1] All medical services previously provided by these institutions have been retained. Nizhny Novgorod residents are served on a territorial basis: Prioksky, Sovetsky, and Nizhegorodsky Districts are served at 41 Ulyanova Street; Kanavinsky, Moskovsky, Leninsky, Sormovsky, and Avtozavodsky Districts are served at 28 Iyulskikh Dney Street.[1]

Structure and Activities

The Center has a capacity of 750 beds and comprises 11 inpatient departments, an outpatient dispensary department, diagnostic and treatment services, and consulting rooms.[1] The institution houses the only children's psychiatric department in the region, with 60 beds, staffed by psychiatrists, teachers, childcare workers, and psychologists.[1][2] The Center also serves as the regional organizational and methodological center for coordinating the activities of all psychiatric institutions in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.[2]

The hospital employs more than 500 staff members. Since 1993, continuing education cycles for mid-level medical workers at psychiatric institutions of healthcare and social services have been regularly held on its premises.[1] In recent years, the institution has been implementing a biopsychosocial model of psychiatric care: rehabilitation work with patients is aimed at improving social competence, developing communication skills, and providing social support.[1][2]

Name and Legacy

The institution bears the name of Pyotr Petrovich Kashchenko — a prominent Russian psychiatrist whose career was associated with the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. The historic building complex of the Kashchenko Hospital constitutes a distinct element of the urban environment.[2]

In Psychiatric Ward No. 1 of the Center, pastoral and spiritual work is conducted: clergy of the Prioksky deanery of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese regularly visit patients, administer the sacraments of confession and the Eucharist, and hold conversations.[3]

On March 27, 2019, a prayer room was consecrated at the hospital: the consecration rite was performed by the head of the diocesan department for cooperation with medical and social institutions, Protopriest Mikhail Poroykov, who was assisted by the dean of the Prioksky district, Priest Andrey Bandin, and the dean's assistant, Priest Grigoriy Veselov; Deputy Chief Physician Natalya Buzuyeva was present at the service. In June 2020, volunteers of the Miloserdiye ("Mercy") movement, operating under the Nizhny Novgorod deanery of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese, delivered clothing, hygiene products, food, and spiritual literature to the institution for patients in the men's and women's wards; the children's ward received didactic materials, educational toys, swings, and display boards purchased with charitable funds.[5][4]
