Results of the Week

Based on the results of the survey of content added to the Encyclopedia, the contest winners are:

  • 1st place: Pikshenkmv, Vasily Lyubaev, of the village of Pikshen, Bolshoboldinsky District of Nizhny Novgorod Region, author of the documentary-journalistic book "Pikshen". The editors note that the content submitted by the people of Pikshen stands out for the depth with which it treats the everyday existence of the Erzya people on Nizhny Novgorod land, and for the uniqueness of the materials presented. In other words, without Vasily Lyubaev (or Kiryon Minkan Vasya) such varied information — above all, the recollections of ordinary villagers — would likely never have seen the light of day. In the editors' view, the book about Pikshen is a model for the researcher of microhistory. The Encyclopedia recommends donating several copies of this publication to the history faculty library of Lobachevsky University. V. Lyubaev is invited to receive the contest's first prize — a mobile phone with 2 simultaneously active SIM cards, GPS and WiFi — at a themed round table devoted to preserving the cultural heritage of the The Peoples of Nizhny Novgorod".
  • 2nd place: Valentin Zelenov, of the village of Vladimirskoye, Voskresensky District Nizhny Novgorod Region). The contribution made by Valentin Zelenov within the contest is significant for perceiving the Mari (nnov.ec) people and the sites of Voskresensky District as a single, meaning-forming structural system. The prize — a large festive "Sakura" firework display — will be delivered by the Encyclopedia to V. Zelenov's home address.
  • 3rd place: Maria Kuznetsova, Nizhny Novgorod. A member of a folk song and dance circle. The prize — a T-shirt with an original print from "Magazinchik Mustanga" (the Mustang Shop) on the contest theme. Maria has also been invited to the round table to receive the prize in person from the artist who made it.

The article may include descriptions, photographs, videos, and other illustrations of your ideas.

At the numerous requests of Nizhny Novgorod residents, in view of record snowfalls and an extreme transport situation in the Nizhny Novgorod Region and power outages in a number of southern districts, the contest final has been moved from December 29, 2010 to January 13, 2011.

How to Participate

Users of the NNOV site (you can register or log in right now) are automatically considered contest participants once they make substantial edits to articles. The list of additions and edits is stored on the server and open for viewing.

Informational additions and articles need not be officiously laudatory or, conversely, disparaging in tone. An analytical style is welcomed: statements of fact, quotations from internet sources, generalizations, and author's reasoning supported by historical sources or eyewitness accounts.

As for the style of presenting materials, the editors advise following the manner of the example articles listed above.

Prizes and Awards

The authors of the most substantial and informative contributions will receive the following valuable prizes:

  • 1st place — a mobile phone with a 480x320 touchscreen, support for JAVA applications, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a satellite navigator, two cameras, and dual-SIM operation.
  • 2nd place — a powerful "Sakura" firework display: 25 sustained volleys with an effect of multicolored glowing palm trees.
  • 3rd place — the attire of an honorary Nizhny Novgorod resident: a T-shirt with an exclusive design on the contest theme.

The contest results were announced at 16:00 on January 13, 2011.

The article authors were invited to the closing gathering, which took place on January 14 at the "Stary Teatr" restaurant from 16:00 to 19:00. A round table with 10 experts also took place there. The style of the event: a ceremonial dinner — a "meaning factory."
