Nikolai Ivanovich Morozkin (2 (14) February 1893 — 8 January 1966) was a Soviet infectious disease physician, doctor of medical sciences, professor and corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. His connection with Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) comes from the years he headed the department of infectious diseases at the Gorky Medical Institute.[2]

Education and early career

Morozkin graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow State University in 1916 and served as a military doctor from that same year. He took part in the Civil War and later worked to suppress outbreaks of typhus, tularaemia and brucellosis in Belarus and Central Asia.[2] From 1923 he worked at the department of infectious diseases of the Smolensk Medical Institute.[2] In 1938–1939 he headed the parasitic typhus section of the Central Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow.[2]

The Gorky years

From 1940 to 1952 Morozkin headed the department of infectious diseases at the Kirov Gorky Medical Institute.[2] In 1940, during this period, he was awarded the degree of doctor of medical sciences.[2] During the Great Patriotic War he published practical manuals for physicians: in 1944 his booklet "Dysentery: its epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment" came out in Gorky as part of the series "To help the practising doctor".[7]

Research and recognition

After leaving Gorky, from 1952 to 1966 Morozkin directed the influenza clinic and served as deputy director for research at the Kyiv Research Institute of Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Ukrainian SSR.[2] In 1957 he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.[2] He wrote more than 150 scholarly works, including three monographs on the early recognition and differential diagnosis of influenza.[2] He died and was buried in Kyiv.[2] His daughter was Professor Natalya Nikolayevna Faerman.[2]
