The Museum of Speeds is a museum in the city of Chkalovsk, Nizhny Novgorod Region, dedicated to the history of high-speed shipbuilding and to the designer of ekranoplans and hydrofoil vessels Rostislav Alekseev. The museum occupies the entire second floor of the V. P. Chkalov House of Culture — a Stalinist Empire-style building with a small tower, constructed in 1940; its windows overlook the Volga.[1] In 2026, the museum underwent renovation.
2026 Renovation
In August 2026, Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin, during a working visit to Chkalovsk, inspected the progress of the museum's renovation.[2] According to the Governor, the completion of the renovation was planned approximately one week after the visit — in time for the opening of the "Russian Wings" festival (12+), scheduled for 8 August 2026.[3] The festival programme included an air show, water performances, the Vasilevsky Bazar, and sports venues.[3]
Nikitin noted that, unlike the neighbouring Memorial Museum of V. P. Chkalov, where the central figure remains pilot Valery Chkalov, the main subject of the Museum of Speeds is Rostislav Alekseev — and not only him. The permanent exhibition comprises five displays: one on burlak (barge-hauling) culture, one on the early history of steam navigation, two halls on the operating principles of ekranoplans, and a hall dedicated to R. E. Alekseev personally, where models of vessels he designed, his office, awards, and documents are kept. In 2026, a complete re-exposition of all exhibition halls was carried out, including the corridor; the following thematic zones were designated: "Vasilyeva Sloboda," "From the Burlaks to Speed — the History of Shipbuilding on the Volga," "R. E. Alekseev. The Formation of a Great Designer," "R. E. Alekseev's Ekranoplans — the Triumph of Engineering Thought," and "Flight over Water." Nearly 22.4 million rubles from the federal budget were allocated for the museum's equipment under the national project "Family"; the halls received eight interactive panels with specially developed software, display cases, dynamic lighting compositions, and interior structures.
According to Nizhny Novgorod Region Minister of Culture Natalya Sukhanova, the renovated Museum of Speeds is no longer just about the past, but also about the future.[4][5] The museum features a unique scale model of the flooded part of Vasilyeva Sloboda, as well as an aquarium installation with live fish, whose floor and back wall are decorated as an underwater town among former residential buildings. The museum's collection includes photographs, furniture, antiques, personal belongings, original documents and copies, scale models of ekranoplans and vessels; interactive displays featuring video presentations are widely used. The museum's holdings number more than 7,000 items, including personal belongings of designer R. E. Alekseev.[5] The museum is part of the Russian Wings museum quarter, located at 4 Chkalova Street, Chkalovsk, Nizhny Novgorod Region.[6][7][1][2]
The museum opened in 2010 and is dedicated to the development of speed on water — from barge-hauling to ekranoplans — as well as to designer R. E. Alekseev. The museum is visited by nearly 100,000 people annually, including river-cruise tourist groups: on average, up to 140 river boats and 50 vessels of the "Valday" type pass through Chkalovsk per navigation season. The museum runs a "Young Guide School," and programs under the "Pushkin Card" scheme have been developed for young visitors.[4][5][7]
