On September 29, 2026, the Municipal Enterprise "Nizhny Novgorod Metro" announced the completion of turnstile upgrades at Moskovskaya and Zarechkaya stations. The work was carried out as part of a five-year equipment modernization program running through 2030.[1][2]
Scope of Work
At Moskovskaya station, 40 new turnstile units were installed: 22 for entry and 18 for exit. At Zarechkaya station, the installation of eight additional exit turnstiles was completed in 2026; the previous year, the station's vestibules had been renovated.[1][3]
The replaced equipment dated from 1973 and had been in service since the opening of the Nizhny Novgorod (then Gorky) metro — that is, for more than 40 years.[2][4]
Specifications of the New Equipment
The new units are more compact than their predecessors: each passageway has been widened by 30 centimeters, allowing unobstructed passage for people with limited mobility, parents with strollers, and passengers with luggage. In addition, the turnstiles are equipped with a built-in payment system and consume less electricity.[1][2] According to gipernn.ru, the turnstiles for the Nizhny Novgorod metro were purchased in Moscow and had previously been in operation; replacements are planned at all stations except Gorkovskaya and Strelka, which are relatively new.[4]
Background and Future Plans
The completion of the work was announced by Deputy Mayor Anton Maksimov. According to him, the turnstile replacement program at all metro stations is being carried out on the instructions of Mayor Yury Shalabayev.[2] Oleg Yaushev, Director of the municipal enterprise "Nizhny Novgorod Metro," specified the technical parameters of the new equipment.[1]
According to the program, the next stations where turnstiles will be replaced are "Burevestnik," "Park Kultury," and "Chkalovskaya."[1][3]
