Anton Leonidovich Maksimov (born May 8, 1961, Gorky) is a Nizhny Novgorod surgeon, a cardiovascular surgeon of the highest category, chief physician of the Academician B. A. Korolev Specialized Cardiac Surgery Clinical Hospital, and an Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod (since 2023).[1][2]

Education and professional career

In 1984 he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the S. M. Kirov Gorky Medical Institute with a degree in surgery. He completed his internship at the N. A. Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital.[1] He is a member of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Russia, as well as the chief freelance specialist in cardiovascular surgery of the Ministry of Health of Nizhny Novgorod Region.[1][2]

In April 2014 he was appointed chief physician of the Specialized Clinical Cardiac Surgery Hospital named after Academician B. A. Korolev. The hospital was opened in 1986 on the initiative and under the leadership of Academician Korolev.[1]

Development of cardiac surgery in Nizhny Novgorod Region

Under Maksimov's leadership, the hospital became the first in the region to use implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and three-chamber pacemakers. During his years of work, the hospital has introduced endovascular heart valve replacement, endovascular aortic replacement, and operations using endoscopic equipment and minimally invasive technologies.[1] In 2018 the hospital performed its first heart transplant, an operation that Academician Korolev regarded as the institution's fundamental goal.[1]

Under Maksimov, the region's only hybrid operating room was created, allowing cardiopulmonary bypass to be combined with X-ray diagnostics; a sterilization department was brought into service, and a new heart-lung machine and cardiology-profile MRI equipment were acquired.[1] By the time he was granted honorary citizenship, the hospital was performing more than 5,000 operations a year, about 3,500 of them high-tech procedures and more than 1,000 with cardiopulmonary bypass, and ranked among the top five cardiac surgery clinics in Russia.[1]

In 2026, at the opening of the air ambulance helipad on the grounds of the "Health Quarter," Maksimov noted that organizing the access routes required engineering calculations and consultations with specialists: in the end, a single road was built to the pad, and the surface is made of aluminum slats that require no concrete work.[2]

Recognition

He has been awarded certificates of honor by the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Health of Nizhny Novgorod Region, and the Territorial Compulsory Medical Insurance Fund of Nizhny Novgorod Region. He has also received letters of gratitude from the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region, the City Duma of Nizhny Novgorod, and the administration of the city's Sovetsky District.[1] The title of Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod was conferred by decision of the City Duma on June 28, 2023 (No. 118).[1][2]
