The Cadet Corps named after General of the Army V. F. Margelov is a state-funded general education boarding institution located in the settlement of Istomino, Balakhninsky District, Nizhny Novgorod Region. Its full official name is "Nizhny Novgorod Cadet Corps of the Volga Federal District named after General of the Army Margelov V. F."[1] The Corps operates on the grounds of the former military garrison of the 786th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Air Defense Forces.[7] In December 2015 it was granted district-level status and joined the "KaDet'stvo" (Cadethood) project of the Volga Federal District, becoming the fifth corps in the VFD to hold that status.[2]
History and Status
The Corps is among the oldest institutions of the cadet movement in modern Russian history.[2] It bears its current name in honor of Vasily Filippovich Margelov — General of the Army and founder of the modern Airborne Forces. The airborne specialization is reflected in the curriculum: cadets undergo airborne and weapons training.[5]
On 21 December 2015, at a formal ceremony, the Corps was presented with the Banner Ribbon of the Volga Federal District. The ceremony was attended by Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Valery Shantsev, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the VFD Mikhail Babich, Hero of Russia Vyacheslav Bocharov, and Deputy Commander of the Airborne Forces Major General Vladimir Kochetov. At the same time, an agreement was signed on the transformation of the institution.[2] Under this agreement, plans were made to construct a sports and fitness complex, a new dormitory building, and to expand enrollment by adding a seventh-grade cohort — so that the full course of study would span five years.[2] The sports and fitness complex had been built by the mid-2020s.[5]
Academic Activities and Admissions
Enrollment is open to 7th- and 10th-grade students; up to 20% of places are reserved for cadets from other regions of Russia.[6] Cadets come from across the Nizhny Novgorod Region and from other constituent entities of the Federation.[3] From 2013 to 2015, the number of applicants per place at Volga Federal District cadet corps increased several-fold, exceeding four applicants per place in 2015.[2] The majority of graduates go on to enroll in universities of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.[2]
Career-guidance activities include visits to affiliated educational institutions and military units. As part of the district-wide project "KaDetsvo" ("CaDethood"), which unites the cadet corps of the Volga Federal District, a network of institutions is being developed to train personnel for the armed forces and security agencies.[2] The "Gvardeyets" training center operates on the corps' premises.[7]
Infrastructure and Museum
On the grounds of the military township, a MiG-17F aircraft monument erected in 1974 has been preserved.[5] On the corps' own grounds stand a monument to Army General Vasily Margelov and a memorial to graduates killed in combat.[5] The corps museum comprises four exhibitions: a memorial exhibition dedicated to V. F. Margelov; one on the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945; one on the history of the cadet movement in Russia; and one on the history and development of the Airborne Forces.[4] Also located on the grounds are an Alley of Glory, a library, and a dormitory building.[5]
