On September 1, 2026, the new school year began in the Nizhny Novgorod Region: more than 350,000 schoolchildren took their seats.[2] Of these, around 30,000 pupils attended first grade for the first time.[1] In Nizhny Novgorod alone, more than 162,000 children started school, including approximately 14,000 first-graders.[2]
Congratulations and school renovations
The Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin congratulated schoolchildren, parents, and teachers on Knowledge Day, wishing the children new discoveries and success in their studies, science, creative pursuits, and sports.[3] Regional Minister of Education Mikhail Puchkov noted that the region is steadily updating its educational environment: building new schools, creating innovative facilities, and equipping teaching laboratories with modern equipment.[1]
In 2025, Opening of Four New Schools in Nizhny Novgorod Region (2026) in the region, and construction of two more educational institutions began with the aim of welcoming pupils as early as 2026. One of the new schools bears the name of Hero of the Soviet Union Aleksandr Molev and Dzerzhinsk.[3]
In Buturlin District, the Yagubovskaya School reopened for September 1 following a major interior renovation that cost nearly 7 million rubles. The building, constructed in 1980, serves around 60 children from six settlements. In 2022, a Tochka Rosta ("Growth Point") center opened on the school's premises; the gymnasium was also fully renovated at that time. At the ceremonial assembly, Nizhny Novgorod Region Legislative Assembly deputy Rustam Dosaev addressed the pupils and also held a "class period" for senior students on the topic of career choice.[4]
Development of technical education
The region operates 13 high-tech Kvantorium facilities, which are attended by around seven thousand children and teenagers. In their sessions, schoolchildren study programming, build robots, and conduct scientific experiments. According to Governor Nikitin, the number of young people interested in science and invention continues to grow.[3]
Practical changes
In 2026, parents were given an additional opportunity to enroll their child in a school outside their registered address: applications were accepted until September 5, subject to the availability of places at the chosen institution.[1]
