The "Katran" is a hydrofoil sea vessel, an upgraded version of the Kolkhida (ship)))" designed by the Central Design Bureau for Hydrofoil Ships named after R. E. Alexeyev). It was built at the Poti shipyard from 1988, and from 1994 onward at the Volga shipyard in Nizhny Novgorod, including vessels built for export. [1] [2]

From Poti to Nizhny Novgorod

The "Katran" is notable not so much for its design — it is a development of the "Kolkhida" — as for its production history. The series, begun in Poti, moved to the Volga shipyard in Nizhny Novgorod after the collapse of the USSR: the project returned to where it had been conceived. [1] The series was built to Project 10391; the lead vessel was named "Albatros", and five ships of this type were built in total. [2]

From 1994, "Katran" vessels were built in Nizhny Novgorod, including for export. For the city, this was a rare case in those years of complex shipbuilding not shutting down but instead gaining a new site. [1]
