Ioann (secular name — Ivan Dobroslavin; 1871 — not earlier than 1927) — Russian Orthodox Church, exiled in the 1920s to Nizhny Novgorod without the right to leave. His connection to the Nizhny Novgorod region is also established by the fact that he received his elementary theological education at the Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary.[1]

Education and early service

He was born in 1871. He graduated from the Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary, after which he attended courses at the Kazan Theological Academy.[1] In 1894 he was ordained a priest.[1] In 1914 he took monastic vows, was elevated to the rank of archimandrite, and was appointed superior of the Transfiguration Monastery in Novgorod-Seversky.[1]

Episcopal service

On 16 October 1916 he was consecrated bishop of Novgorod-Seversky, a vicar of the Chernigov diocese; the consecration took place in Novgorod-Seversky.[1] From 1922 he was bishop of Konotop, a vicar of the same Chernigov diocese: on 21 March (3 April) 1922 he is mentioned with this title as residing in Konotop.[1]

Arrest and exile to Nizhny Novgorod

The bishop was presumably arrested in 1922. In 1923 he was administratively exiled to Nizhny Novgorod without the right to leave.[1][2] Indirect evidence that Ioann (Dobroslavin) had by this time lost his see is the appointment, on 15 February 1923, of a new bishop to the Glukhov vicariate of the Chernigov diocese, whose jurisdiction also included Novgorod-Seversky.[1] In 1927 Ioann (Dobroslavin) is mentioned as bishop of Konotop, retired. His further fate is unknown.[1] According to the PSTGU database «For Christ They Suffered», the bishop's fate can be traced further: in exile he served as parish priest of the Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Glushenki, Bolshoye Maresyevo district, Nizhny Novgorod region; on 17 November 1937 he was arrested on a charge of «counter-revolutionary agitation», and on 14 December 1937 he was shot in Gorky.[2]
